This is the book I would have written for myself

I am a senior engineer with years of experience working primarily in C, C#, perl, and T-SQL. I have basic python, and dusty memories of two years of college math. In the last year, my data set has ballooned at the rate of 1Tb every two months and will soon exceed the handling capacity of my old analytics stack. Blessed by my manager with a shiny new hadoop cluster and time to study, I'm learning new tricks. This book is one of the first I found, and for me it was perfect. It reads like a walk-through from a smart coworker: enough to get me going, the most important moving parts, a few gotchas, where to go for help, some simple working examples... It got me moving on my first project in just a few hours. This is the book I'd have written for myself.

A lot of practical examples: useful for beginners

It is the book I wish I had available when I was starting a recent research project.
In little more than 200 pages it delivers the essential you need to know if you want to do data science and use Python for that (and you should, the authors suggest!). The part of the book I have particularly appreciated is the list of problems you have to face in practice and the proposed solution: loading your data in a fast and easy way by different sources, for instance, or the way to build and tune complex machine learning models for regression and classification problems. Your data can't fit into memory? It happens, as you know. Well there's a paragraph just for that and there are clear and efficient coding examples to solve the problem. I feel safer with this book with so many examples and solutions. Some books I was looking for help in my projects. This one appears to be very useful.

Must to read and have it on your bookshelf, whether you are a Pythonista or not

Although I am an experienced Data Scientist who knows well Python's stack for Data Science (scikit-learn, pandas, statsmodels, numpy, scipy, matplotlib, IPython), this book captured my attention and I have read a half of it during the first two days after getting the book. This book is easy to read for novices and experts alike (it does not contain a lot of math and wherever there are formulas they are not difficult to grasp), though some familiarity with Python packages comprising the Data Science stack will greatly facilitate material understanding. The writing style authors chose is excellent as it teaches readers in a very logical and pedagogically appealing way: the way of data pre-processing and analysis occur in projects that data scientists and engineers often encounter when aiming to solve the real-worlds tasks.

The books begins with a description of how to install Python and various packages needed to run the code. The purpose of these packages is also explained. Different Python distributions are briefly discussed together with their characteristics, so that a reader can select a distribution particularly suitable to his/her needs. As all code examples in the book are run in IPython Notebook, special attention is paid to a short but comprehensive introduction into IPython itself. Data sets used in the book are described too.

After advising on installation of Python and its packages, the book guides readers towards fast and easy data loading from a file, including the case when the entire data set cannot be loaded during one read in the memory and the solution offered is to load it in chunks by using pandas.
Furthermore, answers to the following problems are provided: how to deal with erroneous records, how to treat categorical and text data, what are useful data cleansing and transformation operations implemented in pandas, how to use the optimized data structures - numpy arrays - and what operations on them can be done.

Once data is loaded and converted to a suitable representation, the book then spends a chapter on the general Data Science pipeline that can be implemented with scikit-learn. The pipeline includes dimensionality reduction via either feature extraction or feature selection, outlier detection, predictive modeling (classification and regression), optimization of model's hyper-parameters, and model's performance evaluation. This material creates the holistic view what typical data analysis is comprised of.

The next chapter introduces several popular machine learning algorithms in detail. Among them are linear and logistic regression, Naive Bayes, support vector machines, bagging and boosting ensembles. Special attention is paid to scikit-learn solutions of the 3Vs of big data: namely, volume, velocity and variety. Scalability with volume is solved with incremental learning when at any given moment of time, only a portion (batch) of the entire data fit to the available memory is used to update a model, hence, a model learns incrementally as new batches arrive. To keep up with velocity, scikit-learn offers a number of classification and regression algorithms optimized for speed. Data variety is deal with the help of hashing and sparse matrices. The chapter ends with short examples of doing basic operations of Natural Language Processing with the NLTK package and data clustering.

Final two chapters are devoted to social network analysis with the NetworkX package and data visualization with the matplotlib and pandas packages, respectively.

Although I have both paper and electronic versions of this book, I would advise first to buy the paper version as numerous code is much easier to understand in this format because one can see the entire snapshot at once.

In his memoir, David Breashears not only explores his passion for Everest and mountaineering, but he also refracts it through the tragedy of May 1996, when 12 climbers were killed in attempting to climb Everest and sheds additional light on the events that led to the tragedy and the heroic rescues of some of the stranded survivors. It is also interesting to learn the story behind the IMAX film that was his reason for being on Everest that season, as well as his entry into cinematography. It is first and foremost his memoir, and not the definitive story of the 1996 tragedies, but it is a must-read for those who are deeply fascinated by those as it contains information that is not found in other books.

Tools and perspectives that can improve decision making

Both editors are Professor at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, which is one of the highest-ranked business schools in the world. Stephen J. Hoch is Professor of Marketing, while Howard C. Kunreuther is Professor of Decision Sciences and Public Policy and Management. Robert E. Gunther serves as coordinating writer. The book is split up in 4 parts, with each part consisting 3-to-5 standalone chapters.
Chapter 1 - A Complex Web of Decisions serves as an introduction to the book, explaining that we make a wide range of decisions every day. It starts with a very strong point: "Most of us do not make great decisions, and few of us are aware of this fact." However, through the different chapters in this book the editors hope to improve our awareness of the intricacies of the decision-making process. "We examine how people should make decisions according to the models, how they actually behave, and how they can improve their decision making."
The set-up of the book is that we look at decision making from various levels, from an individual/detailed level to a very broad level. In Part I - Personal Decision Making, consisting of 3 chapters, the authors look at individual decision making. These decisions are often influenced by emotions, intuitions, and a focus on present versus future consequences. "How do these factors influence decision making? How can we use these personal assets and foibles to make better decisions?" Understanding these factors should allow us to improve our personal decision making.
The second part, Managerial Decision Making, consisting of 4 chapters, focuses on the managerial decision-making process. "We may be more concerned in this role with using models to set up decision processes in our organization, balancing speed and reflection, dealing with complexity and reframing questions to break out of traditional mind-sets." This part provides us with a variety of tools and perspectives that can help our decision making with an interesting chapter on the differences in Eastern and Western decision making, but also a very strong one on framing of decisions.
Part III - Multiparty Decision Making moves from a single manager to the next level of complexity - interactions among several managers in negotiations across multiple periods. It discusses critical issues at this level. This part, in particular, shines new light on a number of decision making issues. It provides a link with game theory (the field of strategy making), reputation, negotiations, and the impact of modern communications technologies on negotiations.
The final and broadest perspective is discussed in Part IV - Impact of Decision Making on Society. Decisions on this level involve a mix of personal and collective values and reflect quirks in how we prepare for high-impact, low-risk events. And there are some amazing conclusions in this part, whereby we sometimes follow the crowd in the wrong direction and the different approaches between our public and private decisions.
Although this book is named 'Wharton on Making Decisions', there are various chapters by specialists from other academic institutions. Each chapter is an excellent piece of work and can be read on a stand-alone basis. However, as a collection it enables us to improve our understanding of the decision making process on different levels, which should enable us to make better decisions, which, in turn, should result in outstanding outcomes. The insights are based on the latest research in this field (this book was initially published in 2001). Please note that the book is written in somewhat academical language.

This is one of the volumes which comprise a series published by John Wiley & Sons. It was edited by Stephen J. Hoch and Howard C. Kunreuther with Robert E. Gunther. In the first chapter which serves as an introduction, Hoch and Kunreuther examine what they characterize as a "complex web of decisions." As they observe, "We need to make the decision making process conscious, to be aware that we are cutting corners and when we need more thorough analysis. Building this awareness of the process - especially given the new complexities of decision making in our modern age - is crucial to successful management....The goal of this book is to build this awareness of the intricacies of the decision-making process." Collectively, the 16 contributors explore decision making on four separate but related levels: as an individual, in our role as a manager, in the context of negotiations and other multiparty interactions, and at the broadest level, in terms of how societal decisions can be managed.

Appropriately, the material is organized within Four Parts:

"Personal Decision Making" (Chapters 2-4): Issues addressed include the challenges of personal decisions, the role the emotions play in managerial decisions - for good or ill, how humans make "surprisingly effective decisions" even when using short cuts, and the same approaches can lead to serious errors...and consequences.

"Managerial Decision Making" (Chapters5-8): Issues addressed include how to combine analytical models with intuition and other approaches during the managerial decision-making process, the significant differences between "the expedient Western approach" and the "reflective Eastern strategy" of decision making, and why managers must be able to "manage their own frames, or they will be blinded by their own successes and the limits of their world views."

"Multiparty Decision Making" (Chapters 9-12): Issues addressed include the nature and extent of interactions between and among managers across multiple periods, what Game Theory suggests about how people learn from experience, how reputations affect the way partners and opponents approach negotiations, how these reputations can best be used and shaped, common deceptions in negotiations and how to recognize them, how decision-support systems and resources can help improve negotiation results.

"Impact of Decision Making on Society" (Chapters 13-17): Subjects covered include various uses of medical tests based on analytical models, the impact of personal (Protected") values on societal decisions, what "protected decisions" are and how they are made, the nature of "information cascades" which involve either "learners" or "lemmings," and how and why inconsistencies in private and public decisions suggest a "split personality."

The 16 contributors are to be commended on their collective examination of how people should make decisions, how they actually do so, and how they can improve their decision making. I especially appreciate the generous provision of real-world examples (e.g. Nick Leeson and Barings Securities), as well as reader-friendly check-lists (e.g. lessons for managers based on the Leeson/Barings scandal), charts and graphs which illustrate core concepts, and use of italics and bold face to expedite periodic review of key points.

My guess (only a guess) is that those in greatest need of what this book offers are least likely to invest the time and effort required to absorb and digest the material, much less act upon it. If you are among them, if you have by now concluded not to read this book, reconsider that decision. Odds are, it's a bad one.

The AUTHORIZED paperback edition! Avoid bad facsimiles!

This review is for the 'Diamond Jubilee Edition' of "Secret Teachings of All Ages" paperback issued by the Philosophical Research Society in 1989 (1st pb edition - all b&w) and reprinted in 2000 (54 illustrations are in color - the rest in b&w). This is the best trade edition available of this incredible book. This edition has all of the illustrations from the original text reproduced in good quality (all in b&w in the 1989 edition - 54 illustrations in color and the rest in b&w for the 2000 PB edition). It also includes a couple of foldouts and a vellum overlay.

There are many facsimile editions out currently with no illustrations, or with poor reproductions of them. If you want to truly enjoy this book, seek out one of the authorized editions that made an effort to reproduce the text with the incredible illustrations intact. The original hardcover limited edition is a few feet tall. The edition that I saw was hand-bound and hand-colored, apparently intended for a Masonic library. It would break your coffee table. It was issued in 'reduced size' - still not a small book - in hardcover and in this paperback edition from the Philosophical Research Society. These are the editions that faithfully reproduce the original. I can not speak for the other editions, but I've seen enough complaints to want to advise buyers to seek out these authorized editions from Philosophical Research Society, and to avoid the rest.

(ask the bookseller to check the ISBN if the listing isn't clear about the edition - don't get fooled into buying a bad facsimile!)

These are some of the authorized HC reprint editions issued by PRS over the years, any of which are worth buying. I've not seen each edition, but it seems they have color illustrations that are reprinted in b&w in the 1989 pb 'Diamond Jubilee Edition':

AVOID THE CREATE-SPACE EDITION (ISBN: 1-46101-313-5)! It is really bad, full of typos and the few pictures that are included look awful. The 'reader's guide edition' in PB from Tarcher (ISBN: 1-58542-250-9) only has half of the original illustrations, but has the unabridged text. There are a few other editions available that I have not reviewed.

So, if you are ordering online, ask the bookseller who the publisher is and check the ISBN before purchasing. This book is available in many, many editions, some are humungous and gorgeous books- some are poorly reproduced and edited.

This most wonderful book arrived impeccably in all ways; within the time frame expected, wrapped cleanly in plastic, and having a nice new crispness to the pages as I opened this marvelous book. I would highly recommend anyone interested in esotericism and any of the healing arts to get this for their collection, AND to order it from The Philosophical Research Society, where this book is published from.

Enlightening and practical approach

I am finishing my Masters in Operations Research and Decisions, and I had several courses on Decision theory. This book taught me far more than most of the courses, and it surely helps me more than all together when it comes to real-life decision making.

I like Keeney's approach in that it is simple but strong. While he does give a strong mathematical foundation, he also explains the intuition behind his theory.

Every time someone asks about what I have learned in the MSc I like to give an example I thought about while reading his book (and using his approach). Let's suppose you are seating on the Sofa and you want to eat something, what do you do? 100% of my friends answered that they go to the kitchen and look for something eat. That's exactly what Keeney is against: to take decisions based on the alternatives (what he calls alternative focus thinking). What his approach would recommend in the described situation, is to stay on the Sofa and think hard about the food that you would mostly like to eat. Than, go to the kitchen and see if you have it. If you do, great! If not, does the pleasure of eating it pay for the pain of going out to buy it? The point is that usually you wouldn't ask yourself this question if you were already in front of the second-best option without knowing what you really want.

The book is well written and full of day-to-day and more complicated examples. All of them applied by the author in his own life or in huge corporations. Very good reading!

According to Dave Reiter: This book is a bit more complex than Smart Choices. It suggests that you always start with your values/preferences for any decision that you want to make. (I think this is often, but not always, a good idea. I think sometimes you're better off starting with the framing of the decision.) This is also a bit dry.

Great play, great electronic version

Othello was one of the first plays I was exposed to when I was younger. It has murder, suicide, intrigue and things that would get a teenager into Shakespeare.

I've had mixed success with some of the free Kindle versions of Shakespeare. Some have been good, some have been awful. This is an exceptional version. It's formatted nicely and is easy to read. The only "lack" is that it is without line numbers, so if you were to use this for academic reasons, you might have an issue or two.

Thus far, Othello's my favorite free Shakespeare play. I missed how much of a jerk Iago was, and all the deception that lead to Othello killing Desdemona.

Shakespeare's best Villain

Is there any other character in all of literature who is as calculatingly evil as Shakespeare's Iago? His jealousy over being passed over in favor of Cassio engenders a revengeful scheme that turns jealousy into a weapon used to destroy the noble Othello. Here innocence and trust is contrasted with pure manipulation and evil in what is one of Shakespeare's most revealing tragedies. The characters act exactly as they would be expected to based on the overriding quality that they represent. Othello is wonderful Shakespearean drama that ranks among his greatest works.

The Folger Library editions are my favorite. Each page has a facing page that explains obscure terms and helps as a handy reference to make reading the plays pleasurable and educational. These paperback editions of Shakespeare's works are a great value and fit in your pocket.

Really, if you enjoy Shakespeare's plays, then you'll enjoy Othello. The actual read-ability of this digital version is excellent, so I'd recommend it above other digital versions.

If you are a fan of the British Invasion or early rock music and gear this book is for you. Dozens of great stories from the early pioneers of British rock. But this book also includes a healthy dose of info about many of Britain's top session aces-including one Jimmy Page. Bass players aren't ignored either. This book is alot of fun to read and is loaded with many great photos as well.

Nancy Douglas is a teacher, materials writer, and editor who has been in ELT for over twenty years. 65 pages general info on nursing the first time, good review, it covers all the basics a few b&w pictures. Info on w.i.c., breast feeding, weaning, at home, problems, working mother, diet, manual ex, colic. nothing else on other child rearing except burping. This book is an easy read.
I read it in two nights while playing online games.
