About the Author
Muhammad Mojlum Khan was born in 1973 in Habigong, Bangladesh and was brought up and educated in England. He is a literary critic, prolific writer and a researcher in Islamic thought and history. People exist in time and place

Not only does this book include a wide spectrum of personalities throughtout Muslim history, but each person's biography includes what was going on in his/her world. This is the best collection of Muslim biographies that I've seen. Well written, interesting information and set into time and place.

A Light Mystery/Romance

Entertaining. Nth is is the second book in this series. I like the writing and all of the characters. My only problem with this series, and this is just my opinion, is that Maddie and Nick don't have the passion I want to see them have. Some of his lines are a little "cheesy". This a very clean read. I would like to see some heat between Maddie and Nick.

I'm not one for romance books that read more like instruction or how-to manuals (you know what I mean) ...

Third book in the series and I have preordered 4and 5. I am wondering if this is a young adult series as the "love scenes" are squeaky clean. Now, I'm not one for romance books that read more like instruction or how-to manuals (you know what I mean) but a little heat would not be unwelcomed. Especially since we've been waiting for Maddie and Nick to get together. All the secondary characters are delightful and the villains (Marla and Cassidy) are real...well, insert your own word. I'm trying to keep it clean when it comes to those two.
My one reason for the 4 star rating, once again, is the repetition of certain phrases. "Smoking hot" "my Maddie", "you two are so cute", "you two are going to make me puke” and the endless pools that this town subect our sweet couple to.
Still, the story is engaging and I will continue to read the series. What I find wrong with the writing is dwarfed by the storyline as a whole. I hope I don't put anyone off this series. It truly is enjoyable.

So sweet it gave me a toothache

I really wanted to like this story, but I struggled to even finish it. I read the author's Ivy Morgan books and enjoyed them so I thought I would try this series. I downloaded the first three books and really enjoyed the first one in the series. The second book started to become annoying with Maddie's insecurities over everything, but I was hoping book three would be better. It wasn't. The constant proclamations of how much Maddie and Nick love each other was way over the top. Not only were they annoying, but it seems like the entire town (minus Cassidy and Marla) drank from the same pitcher of koolaid because all they could talk about were how perfect a couple they are. The premise of the story is very good I just wish the main characters weren't written as lovesick middle schoolers.

About the Author

Abigail M. Judge, PhD, is a clinical and child and family forensic psychologist. Dr. Judge maintains a private practice in Cambridge, MA, is a Forensic Consultant at the Law and Psychiatry Service at Massachusetts General Hospital, and holds an academic appointment at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Judge provides psychotherapy, consultation, forensic evaluation, expert witness testimony, and reunification intervention.

Robin M. Deutsch, Ph.D., ABPP, is a child and family forensic psychologist, board certified in couples and family practice. She is Director of the Center of Excellence for Children, Families and the Law at William James College in Newton, MA, where she developed the Certificate in Child and Family Forensic Issues and the Child and Family Evaluation Service. She is a founding Board member of Overcoming Barriers, was formerly an Associate Clinical Professor at Harvard Medical School, and was Director of Training and Forensic Services at the Children and the Law program at Massachusetts General Hospital for over 20 years. She provides mediation, consultation, reunification intervention, expert witness testimony, and parenting coordination services, as well as training for mental health professionals, lawyers, and judges on child custody evaluation, issues related to high-conflict divorce, and parenting coordination.

Another Perspective

I have attended an Overcoming BArriers Program and was not impressed. They did nothing for me and my estranged family other than reinforce their negative views and their expertise was not regarded as helpful in my case. I found the camp ultimately not helpful in the least. I have been asked to write reviews but feel as if they cull out all negative or not positive critiques and wish to only present hopeful scenarios. My concerns about the camp and its direction went unadressed. Little to no outreach post camp experience other than to write a review.

Great resource !

I am a therapist working with children and families in high conflict divorce situations and working to reunify parents and children in these families. I found this book an invaluable resource. Not only does it give critical concrete interventions, it also includes tools for psycho-education (which may not always be intuitive) and points out the ways traditional family therapy may not succeed in mending parent/child relationships. It also highlights how the parent that children continue to see may unintentionally or intentionally contribute to the problem and offers ideas to assist in changing that behavior. A great resource for therapist and attorneys who deal with families in these situations.

This book is an informative and superb look at this very difficult and challenging problem. I am impressed at how thoroughly the concepts, research, and practice have been brought together to hopefully help move the ball down the field and make things better, especially for the kids.

When you need a reminder that life is still good...no matter what.

I bought this book when it was entitled "10,000 Things to be Happy About". Just picked it off a shelf in the bookstore one day when my mom was trying to survive her experimental chemo treatments and the rest of us were struggling to cope with her impending loss. That day, this book was like a shaft of sunlight splintering a murky room. It made me remember that there are good things in life no matter what crushing sadness we were experiencing. I'd just pick up the book, open it to any page, and I'd just start reading that wonderful list of happy things. It was like a lifeline to me at times. I've since purchased it as a gift for another person going through the same experience and will be purchasing it again soon to give as a gift once more to someone experiencing their own kind of pain. Sometimes we just need to be reminded that life is still good. To the author, a simple heartfelt thank you from me.

Positively Perfect

This book is so fun!

It's an easy read that I like to take to the park with my highlighter, and peruse through while the children are climbing on the playground. It's also a good reminder to do things that you've forgotten about but LOVE. This would be a great coffee table book, or a gift to a friend who's already high on life.

About the Author
Stephanie Kimbro, MA, JD, has operated a Web-based virtual law office in North Carolina since 2006 and delivers unbundled legal services to clients online. She is the recipient of the 2009 ABA Keane Award for Excellence in eLawyering and is the co-founder of Virtual Law Office Technology, LLC (VLOTech), which was acquired by Total Attorneys in the fall of 2009.

In addition to her virtual law practice, Kimbro is a technology consultant providing assistance to other legal professionals interested in the online delivery of legal services. Kimbro writes about the ethics and technology issues of delivering legal services online and is interested in the use of technology by legal professionals to increase access to justice in our country. She has presented continuing legal education (CLE) courses on a variety of topics for the ABA, ALI-ABA, and different state bar groups and law schools. Kimbro also teaches a course on virtual law practice as a faculty member of Solo Practice University, a Web-based legal education community.

Kimbro serves on the board of the Legal Services National Technology Assistance Project (NTAP), the advisory board of the International Legal Technology Standards Organization (ILTSO), and is a member of the ABA eLawyering Task Force, the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA) Law Practice Management (LPM) Council, the NCBA Tech Advisory Committee and the NCBA YLD Internet Committee.

Kimbro's the recognized face of virtual offices, but the books only ok

Stephanie Kimbro and her husband arguably made one of the very first attempts to commoditize virtual law offices before selling it to Total Attorneys. It may just be that I've got a long background in software, but I expected more from this book. Stephanie does a great job of presenting the business case for a virtual law office but not the details of what's going on. I think that the book could have done with more mechanics and less of the business case and justifications.

The book is chock full of other attorneys and firms stories of moving to or adding a virtual office. If you don't know much about starting an online office or have not researched the area, this is the book for you. If you've been looking and researching already, you may want to keep going.

It has case studies, checklists, how-tos and is fully documented with links to relevant state bar ethics and advisory opinions as well as links to other helpful resources.

About the Author

Karen Timberlake is professor emeritus of chemistry at Los Angeles Valley College, where she taught chemistry for allied health and preparatory chemistry for 36 years. She received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Washington and her Master’s degree in biochemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Professor Timberlake has been writing chemistry textbooks for 30 years. During that time, her name has become associated with the strategic use of pedagogical tools that promote student success in chemistry and the application of chemistry to real-life situations. More than one million students have learned chemistry using texts, laboratory manuals, and study guides written by Karen Timberlake. In addition to Basic Chemistry, she is also the author of General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Structures of Life, Second Edition and Chemistry: An Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Ninth Edition with the accompanying Study Guide with Solutions for Selected Problems, Laboratory Manual, and Essentials Laboratory Manual.

Professor Timberlake belongs to numerous science and educational organizations including the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). In 1987, she was the Western Regional Winner of Excellence in College Chemistry Teaching Award given by the Chemical Manufacturers Association. In 2004, she received the McGuffey Award in Physical Sciences by the Textbook Author Association, awarded for textbooks whose excellence has been demonstrated over time. In 2006, she also received the Texty “Textbook” Excellence Award from the Textbook Authors Association for the first edition of Basic Chemistry. She has participated in education grants for science teaching including the Los Angeles Collaborative for Teaching Excellence (LACTE) and a Title III grant at her college. She often speaks at conferences and educational meetings on the use of student-centered teaching methods in chemistry to promote the learning success of students.

expensive

there is nothing wrong with the material in the book...i believe, as probably most students do, that I, being a captive audience without any means of recourse, am being screwed by the book companies...this is a spiral bound notebook with poor quality paper that costs hundreds of dollars and is meant to be destroyed by the student...there is nothing enlightening in it, you will find no novel experiments or previously unknown knowledge, they just print experiments that have been done for decades....

- Instructions are clear and are followed with explanations
- Certain experiments have a helpful diagram showing the set-up
- Easy to erase on! No shredding of the paper and hardly any pencil residue is left behind
- Lightweight, this will not be lugged around

Cons:
- The age-old issue college students face, ridiculously costly for a book that's just going to be torn
- Not too sturdy, be careful where you put this as the pages are easily folded, bent and torn
- The pages are easy to tear out which is great, but be careful turning them especially if they get stuck on a spiral.

In his now classic Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Robert Pirsig brings us a literary chautauqua, a novel that is meant to both entertain and edify. It scores high on both counts.

Phaedrus, our narrator, takes a present-tense cross-country motorcycle trip with his son during which the maintenance of the motorcycle becomes an illustration of how we can unify the cold, rational realm of technology with the warm, imaginative realm of artistry. As in Zen, the trick is to become one with the activity, to engage in it fully, to see and appreciate all details--be it hiking in the woods, penning an essay, or tightening the chain on a motorcycle.

In his autobiographical first novel, Pirsig wrestles both with the ghost of his past and with the most important philosophical questions of the 20th century--why has technology alienated us from our world? what are the limits of rational analysis? if we can't define the good, how can we live it? Unfortunately, while exploring the defects of our philosophical heritage from Socrates and the Sophists to Hume and Kant, Pirsig inexplicably stops at the middle of the 19th century. With the exception of Poincaré, he ignores the more recent philosophers who have tackled his most urgent questions, thinkers such as Peirce, Nietzsche (to whom Phaedrus bears a passing resemblance), Heidegger, Whitehead, Dewey, Sartre, Wittgenstein, and Kuhn. Why I'm Writing Review Number 473 of a 30 year old book

I'm compelled to write this review after browsing the others, because something has to be said about book that isn't being pointed out for someone who is interested in the book for the first time.

At this point, this book can be found on the front table in your local bookstore. Other philosophy books can be found in the philosophy section either collecting dust, or being perused by someone intensely interested in philosophy who is well versed in debates that have gone on for centuries.

I have listened to the author, Robert Pirsig, being interviewed, and it seems that he did, in fact, intend for this book and its premise of "Quality" to be the great, all encompassing philosophy, presented in a straightforward, readable manner. However, despite Pirsig's intention, that is not quite why this book has become so famous.

This book is famous because it fills a perfect niche in that it introduces some very complicated philosophical questions in a form that the common reader will find interesting. Pirsig is attempting to create a practical philosophy and sets the book against the background of actual experience to make the questions he ponders real for the reader.

With that in mind, if you are not clamoring for a debate with someone else who is knowledgable on the ins and outs of Kierkegaard and Spinoza and are simply looking for a readable book that makes a real attempt of answering the big questions in life, this book is for you.

What I find interesting, and somewhat disturbing, is that many choose to deride this book because it doesn't agree with their notions of philosopy, but fail to grasp that the people who are most likely to read this book won't even be at the table to understand their objections to it unless they read it.

Probably no book has ever been more successful in interesting people in philosophy in the first place. So why are people who are interested in the subject eager to send them away because it disagrees with something they read in some banal tome?

Bottom line, if you ran across this book at your local bookshop or had it recommended to you by a friend, you must read it. It is an awesomely thought inspiring book and asks questions you never thought to ask or at least didn't know how to put your finger on. It's both a good novel and a great introduction to philosophy for people who have an interest in greater questions but not all the time to pursue them. I don't think you should worry about the fact that someone with a Masters Degree in Philosophy, or an equivalent knowledge, is bothered by the book. Also, I wouldn't be thrown by the title. The book isn't trying to sell you a newsletter or convert you to any church (despite the use of the phrase "The Church of Reason") and is only using a bit of Zen philosophy as a grounding for its premise.

Pirsig's premise does have a tendency to never be overtly stated, but I believe that he does this because he doesn't want it overly simplified in the way I'm about to do it.

Pirsig's premise is that we live in a world of both the "Classical" and "Romantic" or, as I'll simplify it, "function" and "form", respectively. Pirsig sees the problems in our world as the result of an overemphasis on form, when function is more essential. However, pure "function" has problems of its own. For example, our bodily organs carry out the function of allowing us to live, but one doesn't really desire for our skin to be translucent so we can watch these functions. In fact, we would have a revulsion to such a thing. Therefore, we have a combination of both of "form" and "function"; our organs work very well without our having to see them. This is the desirable state. This desirable state is called "Quality". Good "function" seems to bring about its own desirable "form". May the decorative towel be damned. That's grossly oversimplified, but there it is.

Finally, one shouldn't be thrown off Pirsig's premise by the fact that, quite frankly, he tends to be an impatient father and not very easy to get along with. While reading the book, it becomes apparent that Pirsig is sharing this with us because he is oblivious to it himself. He makes it obvious that he doesn't understand why no one is pondering the philosophical implications of repairing a motorcycle or why his young son isn't arriving at all of the conclusions he is, despite the fact his son is eleven. He seems to be trapped in the context of his own view of the world.

So, if you want to wade your way through all of the pontificating, please take the time to read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance". If you really, really like it, you'll have to read Pirsig's other book "Lila: An Inquiry Into Morals". Though "Lila" takes a narrative approach that's a bit less readable than "Zen and...", it gives a more comprehensive view of Pirsig's philosophy. Read both. Then you can debate with the philosophy majors.

A re-read forty years later still finds great worth. You DON'T need to know anything about Zen OR motorcycles to appreciate it.

First read it over 40 years ago, while I was attending college, studying Zen, and routinely riding a motorcycle. While those were the "hooks" that piqued my interest at that time, I soon became absorbed by the philosophical meanderings of the author.

Just picked it up for a re-read after learning it is the all-time best-selling book on philosophy, and in the Guinness book for world records for most number of rejections prior to publication; 121! I wondered if my earlier fascination was due to my unique interests at the time.

Other than a brief passage that made me uncomfortable with the author's sexism, I am currently finding the book as enthralling as I did four decades ago. There are even passages I find prescient, like those dealing with human communication. Pirsig was of a mind that infrequent human communication tended to be well-thought-out and meaningful. He decried the fact that technology was making human communications much more frequent, but significantly shallower. This, in the early 1970's! It is not hard to imagine his view of the "enrichment" we have experienced due to "social media".

Major influence on the course of my life

I first read this in 1978 and I've revisited it several times. It influenced the course of my professional life as well as how I've conducted my relationships. In my young adult days I found the most Quality in Pirsig's narrative about Phaedrus and the need for a new spiritual rationality that unites reason and feeling at a basic level. Later I've come to appreciate the down to earth pursuit of Quality at a personal level via Pirsig's motorcycle examples about gumption traps that could frankly apply to any endeavor. Well written, one of my favorite books.
