I am also lucky to know many amateur lunar observers, who, like me, enjoy actually looking at the Moon with tele­ scopes and imaging it with a wide variety of devices ranging from regular 35 mm cameras to video recorders and CCD cameras. My friends who study the Moon, whether in their professions or just for fun, gave me several reasons for doing "another" lunar guidebook. First, the last lunar observer's guide of any length was published over ten years ago, and many reviewers noted that it was badly out of date even then.

A Moon Observer's Handbook

Wlasuk's book is a useful reference for amateur observers and contains specific information about many lunar surface features. Illustrations are clear although some of the photography (b&w only) is inferior compared to other similar books. The book contains several observer report templates and are especially useful if the amateur is hunting for so-called Transient Lunar Phenomena, most likely venting of volcanic gas. A CD-ROM (termed a 'lunar atlas') is included. However, several features I wanted to look out were not on the CD! (I.e., the important volcanic crater Aristarchus--possibly still an active area of vulcanism on the Moon). I personally did not agree with the orthodox recounting of how the Moon formed. Fission is still a workable hypothesis. And it is clear the Apollo missions created more questions than answers about the Moon. One unresolved question not mentioned in this book is the tektite controversy. Some evidence (Apollo 12 specimen and Apollo 16 volcanic glasses) points to at least one type of tektite found on Earth as being lunar in origin. Despite these points, I still recommend this volume for your favorite "lunatic." : )

Don't Waste Your Money, There are Better Books, and Cheaper

Wlasuk's book, _Observing the Moon_ is OK if you have nothing else, but there are better references available, for less money. His illustrations are so-so and his explanations somewhat hard to follow. In many cases, his descriptions of lunar features are not illustrated, so one cannot see what he is describing. A better book for the serious lunar astronomer is Ernest Cherrington's _Exploring the Moon With Binoculars and Small Telescopes_, available on Amazon.com for about 1/3 the price of Wlasuk's book.

Great new author, humorous and well done Sci-fi romance/erotica

I read this book through the Kindle unlimited program- though I'd definitely have paid for this book the $0.99 as it was well worth that price. This is an interesting book/series that is one of the few books of this genre I've read where the differences in culture and even the physical differences between the characters of the alien races is more "realistic". For being a new indie author, this book and series is well done. The book is well edited and comparable to mainstream authors. The somewhat annoying "self- arguing" is better in this book than in the first (Lucia carries on conversations in her own mind- often arguing with herself). The story has humor in addition to the great world building. It is definitely an erotic novel but for the most part the sex scenes are not gratuitous. There may be topics in this book/series though that make some people uncomfortable such as the heroine being abducted and the ménage thing. Though from the reviews of the first book I was expecting to be off-put by what some reviewers described about her family witnessing/walking in on her having sex but in many ways it was handled realistically and with humor and it wasn't played up as "sexy". I would think in cultures that have multiple generations and large families living together that sex would be dealt with in a somewhat more matter of fact way so in that the book seems realistic. I did feel that particularly in the first book that some of the sex became a little redundant and yes the description of the copious semen and fluids Icked me out a time or two. Still overall the love scenes were done well. Book 1 should definitely be read first to get the full affect. My recent pet peeve is authors chopping up books to basically make the reader shell out more money than I would normally spend on a novel that size. I did NOT feel that with these two books at all. Both books are fully fleshed out, reasonably priced and the break between the two books makes sense- though I did read them back to back. If you like a good Sci-Fi erotic romance, this book is definitely worth a read. I'll be keeping an eye out for more books by this author.

Great story

Having read the first book in this series and thouroughly enjoying it, I was pleased to find the rest of Lucia, Soren and Zun's story to be just as entertaining! It is necessarya Hae to read the first book in order to understand the second. In this continuation of the tale, Soren and his brothers return to Melierun, their home planet, along with Lucia and their newborn baby girl. They knew it would be rough since the Melierun people saw humans as a disgusting, animalistic species. Much emotion and mayhem ensue. The real point of this story is a good one. That prejudice is a learned behavior, handed down from generation to generation, and is only destructive and uncivilized. The story does have a HEA, though I do hope the author will write stories for the other 2 Melierun brothers. I'd certainly read them!

Nothing Like the First Book

This book read a sad continuation of the first book. I understand that the author is trying to build and describe the culture, but it was a turnoff for Lucia to be involved in a sexual relationship and mate with one o Soren's brother.

I would have enjoyed the book if it had been a story about one of Soren's brothers finding their mate.

Happy little summer girl

I bought this for my 9 year old daughter for her birthday. She's enjoyed being able to learn songs that she hears at church. I know she would have appreciated a slightly larger print, she is working through them quickly!

In an earlier time, and in a different place, there was once a time of magic--a time of wizards and dragons and elves and dwarves. And, in an unnoticed corner of the world there lived a race of hobbits: a small people with furry feet, and too much common sense to go on adventures. But, when a particularly stable hobbit named Bilbo Baggins is visited by the great wizard Gandalf, he soon finds himself in the middle of an adventure with 13 dwarves, facing ogres and orcs and all sorts of dangers. Is the adventuring life too much for one small hobbit in the great big world? Read this book and find out!

OK, do you have a young reader whom you would like to introduce to The Hobbit? Well, this graphic novel is just the thing! David Wenzel does an excellent job of illustrating the novel, painting the character just like you would expect them to look (unlike some earlier illustrators). Now, the story is abridged, but on the whole, an excellent job was done of turning that book into a graphic novel.

Overall I think that this is an excellent graphic novel, and an excellent adaptation of The Hobbit. My ten-year-old son and I highly recommend it to you!

About the Author

Tim Shelbourne worked for 20 years as a traditional artist and illustrator before converting to digital image making. Tim specializes in digital fine art and photo-manipulation using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Corel Painter. Joy of Photo Cooking

This book provides clear step-by-step instructions for creating many traditional photographic and graphic arts effects using Photoshop. It does not deal with color correction and retouching, but with creating new images based on photographs. It covers a wide variety of effects. You won't use all or even most of them, but if you are interested in this kind of work there should be enough here to make the book worthwhile.

This book is nominally for the CS3 version of Photoshop, and includes a good summary of the new features, but doesn't use very many of them in the recipes.

The most impressive effects were in the chapter "Graphic Art Effects". This chapter deals with creating traditional painterly images such as water color, pencil drawing, pen and ink, and even woodcut. Unfortunately this is also the area where Photoshop gives you the least help--the recipes here are essentially that you do a little bit of prep work, and then you trace the photograph by hand.

Other interesting examples were applying a flat tattoo to a curved body, adding a rainstorm, adding a rainbow (surprisingly easy with an existing rainbow gradient), caricatures (distortion), and adding a simulated wood look under a photograph. It also includes the ever-popular "fully engulfed in flames" look, saved from banality by including flame reflections in a polished saxophone.

The book doesn't do much explaining in the recipes, but it does have a good summary of Photoshop features in the beginning of the book, including a lot about layers (which you will use heavily in these recipes). Unlike many other books the techniques do not depend very much on the correct choice of values for the many Photoshop parameters. Most of the recipes take about ten steps, which I think is a good balance of complexity against the impressive final results.

There are many intermediate screen shots so that you can check your progress (handy if you tend to lose your place and leave out steps). My only significant gripe about the book is that the recipes are printed in a tiny sans serif font (I measured it at 8 points on 9 point line spacing).

Very Good Feature: the sample images are freely downloadable at the book's web site rather than on CD.

A Somewhat Difficult Recipe Book

I have the original CS version of this book plus this one and both books are very similar in content.There has been no CS4, CS4 or CS6 editions of this book.
If you have later than CS3 versions of Photoshop you may find it difficult to follow as various controls have been re-named or changed.
If you persevere with the instructions on how to achieve the effects, the results are quite worthwhile. However the main beef I have with this book is that the author assumes you know where to find the various Photoshop controls and so just says 'go to' ... whereas similar effects books clearly flag the position.
Also, as Photoshop has progressed, some of these effects are now rather outdated.

Not what I expected

I found the title to be a little misleading. Having read (and owning) several of Kelby group books I found "Photo Effect Cookbook" a repeat of those. If you are into graphics using a photograph I am sure it is helpful. More for that interest than the photographer interested in improving their images through Photoshop. I ended up after a week returning the book to the vendor. Not because it was bad, but because it wasn't what I wanted.
