I had never heard of author Rosemary Hines until I saw the first book in the Sandy Cove Series, Out of a Dream, on Bookbub. After reading the description, I knew that I wanted to read it. I could not put it down and of course I bought the second book in the series, Through the Tears, the day I finished the first book.

The second book was just as amazing as the first.
Rosemary Hines tackles difficult subjects - suicide, disabilities, infertility, abortion, new age beliefs, and the fear of kidnapping - all in one novel. Through the Tears will bless you again and again.

As a Christian I have recently felt distant from GOD. I truly believe that these books were put in my path for a reason. The books have taken me to a place where I have begun to focus more on God and trust him in everyday situations.

I have now purchased book 3, Into Magnolia, of the series. Thank you GOD and Rosemary Hines for her talent as a writer.

Author missed the mark

I enjoyed the theme of the first book - Out of a Dream, about a newly married couple and the beginning of their life together. I hoped that the second book would bring about some change that seemed to be the direction of the first in the series. Through the Tears (second in the series) was very disappointing. I thought that the Bible verses quoted were very appropriate and fit the theme of the book very well. The parts that bothered me so much were that Michelle, the main character, was fixated on having a baby. It seemed as if the Bible verses used were going to help the young couple deal with the issue of having a baby, but Michelle was so focused that she wasn't open to God's plan or her husband's feelings. The main issue of the book was infertility and abortion. I don't think the book dealt with those issues beyond the acknowledgments at the end of the book. I was very disappointed in the book and have little desire to read any more of the series. As I said, I liked the Bible verses used, they were very appropriate and added to the story. The story just never really took on the issues trying to be addressed. I think that the book could be a very good fiction story as well as addressing the spiritual. It just never got there.

A Sequel That Delivers

The second of a series, Through The Tears more than holds its own as a sequel. The transition is smooth as the story progresses seamlessly. The characters remain interesting as their lives move through new challenges while dealing with remnants of challenges introduced in the first book. I found myself reading long into the night, unable to leave Michelle and her family. I found many thoughts and feelings of Michelle's to be very familiar. I believed them because I have experience them. Steve's reactions to their circumstances were valid and relatable. The struggles of marriage and parenthood can threaten the best of marriages, and getting ahead of God with our own solutions will surely make things more complicated and can do much harm. I found the book to be engrossing, enlightening, and very entertaining.

Book that Changes Your Life! No Kidding!

I didn't title this review lightly to suggest: "This book changes your life". It truly does. Please recall a great movie you saw in the theater, and remember how you felt good, uplifted and excited afterwards. The movie produced that ecstatic feeling. What if you could feel the sameway all the time, and get two birds with a one stone by simultaneously fulfilling your dreams, improving your own life and becoming the person that you always wanted to be? Well, ultimately you will walk the talk.

When a friend suggested I purhcase this book; I felt sceptical. Thought there is nothing new under the sun - after all, I considered myself somewhat all-done dynamo when it concerns self-help literature. When the book arrived, I thought this is speaking of and refering to same things I am doing with creative visualization - so would it bring any benefits?

It proves out I was so mistaken. The book is more than I expected....and keeps bringing greater benefits into my life. The author's contemporary writing style feels like a friend who is visiting you, and talking to you in person.

It does not matter whether you are a professional or a beginner, this book is for everyone. And yes, you can hypnotize yourself for success, happiness and all good things with its guidance. And with eyes open there are several advantages. First of all, it is easy to stay focused. You are reading and imagining at the same time, so your mind does not wander around as much as with traditional creative visualization. Also, the author is a pro hypnotist and has carefully designed the techniques, for maximum effectiveness.

Let me tell you of my first experience with the method. After I had finished reading the introduction part, I followed the instructions for the first session. I started following instructions, and felt myself going into deep state of relaxation... My mind didn't wander around at all, and then something unbelievable happened. I felt tingles all over my body, not once, but twice. That has never happened with conventional creative visualization or meditation.

Also, during the first session, at one point, I had doubts whether I was really in deep state of hypnosis....but quickly continued with the method.. It was only after I had finished, 20 minutes later (it felt like 5 minutes)...that I realized it ACTUALLY worked. It truly felt rather like 5 minutes than all those 20 minutes it took.

I felt the same way as after the good movie I had seen, and that good feeling lasted for several hours.

After the initial work is done, the book provides many ready sessions -- you can choose which ones to use, or create your own. Also, I empowered this method by including some stuff from Neville Goddard's book "The Law And The Promise". It is a highly recommended companion to this book.

In short, the author Mr. Blair, has written a phenomenal book... I wonder why other professionals from this field have not recognized that you can self-hypnotize yourself eyes wide open -- and sometimes it can be more effective than anything.

I am not kidding you.. I have been doing creative visualization for past 6 years or so....and I honestly think the results I achieved through this book's instructions helped me to assume greater control over my own life.

This book gives you a superior tool for growth, and when combined with other self-help books you might enjoy, you get a powerful aide in creating a life that is everything you expect of life.

But there is a price to pay: you must do it, not once, or twice, but consistently. Your first results may or may not be as fantastic as mine, but it is like a muscle. There is a saying that implies: "As you train, so shall you fight". Your spiritual muscle will get stronger through practice, and in a little while you have gotten yourself a great tool.

I feel safe to recommend this book highly. Buy it... With the price of single pizza, you can get so much fun.. and life is supposed to be fun rather than dull.

Amazingly good book

If you are like me, you probably have had many preconceptions about hypnosis. In reality, we all access this state of consciousness frequently, for example, at a scary movie if you find yourself squirming in your seat while watching the movie you are probably in this state.

As you read this book, you realise that hypnosis really is the ability to use the power of your imagination, while minimising the interference of your conscious mind, to effect permanent and positive benefits in your mind and body, and to break free of those behaviors that do not serve you.

You are learning the skill of communicating with yourself on a deeper level.

This book is organised in a very easy to use manner. There are scripts for 35 different situations ranging from stress to procrastination, better sex, smoking, problem solving etc.

For example, if you were to use the rapid healing script, you read the induction which involves you going down in an elevator, and gradually feeling more and more relaxed till you get to the bottom, then if you wish you may use the deepening script to get into an even deeper state. Then you read out loud the script itself. I noticed that a cut I had, started healing much faster after I read this script. Then, as you practice it more and more, it gets easier to do and you can really feel the effects.

When I read the induction out loud, it worked very well. Then as I used the deepening script I went into the deepest state I believe I have ever consciously experienced. Amazing. There really is amazing power to this technique.

Naturally, you do need to practice this for a while before the changes become permanent. Can you imagine how great you would feel if you were to finally have mastery over your behavior and your emotions?

He also explains why affirmations often do not work. Affirmations can work well if they are done properly. If you do use them in conjuntion with the techniques in this book, then obviously they would be even more effective.

I also highly recommend EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique. Imagine letting go of issues such as stress, anger, sadness, anxiety, sadness, phobias, unforgiveness, by doing a simple acupressure technique which you can do in less than two minutes. You can research this further and download a free manual at [...], and buy various books at Amazon. I hope this was helpful, and I wish I had read this book years ago.

This book is essentially a script book for self-hypnosis. At the beginning of the book is a general induction you can use to induce yourself into a trance state, followed by a selection of 35 scripts for dealing with common issues and helping you to improve your life. You'll find scipts for weight-loss, confidence, motivation, public speaking, lucid dreaming, better sex life and many others.

The book is marketed as using hypnosis while you're awake. This may seem to make it different from other hypnosis books, unless you understand that you are using hypnosis every time you use your imagination and get absorbed by your inner experience - and for that matter any time you read any book that transports you into another world, the world described in that book and you become oblivious to your environment to a certain degree, you are in hypnosis - much like you are in hypnosis when you are absorbed in the action of the movie you are watching on TV. The only difference is that with TV you get to watch the images, and while reading the book, you create them in your mind, according to your interpretation of the words.

Waste of time and money.

There are many good books about The Morrigan available. This is NOT one of them. It is poorly reseached. The author makes connections based on his feelings. Don't waste your time. Read Stephanie Woodfield's Celtic Lore and Spellcraft of the Dark Goddess, one of Morgan Daimler's books on The Morrigan, or Morpheus Ravena's The Book of the Great Queen which are all well written and we'll researched.

When considering this work, the reader will need to keep in mind that it is not intended as a scholarly / historical treatise on the history of the Great Queen...it is more of a reflection on the author's experience over time and the process of integrating those experiences into the larger context of available history / literature.

Personally, I enjoyed the work overall - the author has an easy, conversational style, and much of his experience matches my own. As supplemental material for someone looking for a way to incorporate the mythology, it can be helpful; if looking for primary source material, the reader is advised to brush up on their archaic Gaelic and consult the available (if fragmentary) literature.

A Feast of Information

Christopher Penczak has done it again. His new book on the Celtic crow goddess brings his usual easy-going style of writing and friendly approach to learning new things.

As someone dedicated to the Dark Goddess in all her guises, I found this book tremendously helpful in deepening my connection with the Morrighan. There are other books on this goddess, but none lay out the information in a way that's not only scholarly, but easily accessible as for all. I felt like I could immediately put to use the information in each section as I turned the pages.

As a grimoire, Penczak shares his own personal rituals and insights which would be very helpful for folks just getting to know this mysterious goddess.

The Morrighan is not for the faint of heart. Those who approach her must do so with strength and heartfelt daring. This is exactly the type of book that can help you cultivate those things for a lifetime.

This is a really impressive book, or should I say a battle plan that has really caught my attention with its description. As I started reading I was amazed by interesting techniques offered. It made me a stronger person and more aware of machinations of enemies in our midst. A must have for anyone looking to win in life’s situations. Highly recommended.

This book teaches its readers great information about mind control. The idea of controlling minds amazes me. I never thought it really exists and there’s something to learn with the ability to influence. Yes, I agree with the possible mind control is intimidation. I am usually a victim of intimidation where I end up with no choice. Mind control is never easy and it’s truly wonderful to know that some people really possess this kind of ability to manipulate someone’s mind. It’s an advantage to have learning about the techniques of mind control, not to take advantage of people, but merely to defend oneself and win.

The key takeaway from this book I would say is the fact that I learned the mind can do so much more than I previously imagined. A good introductory survey of philosophical topics as they were treated by various medieval thinkers throughout the entire period, from late antiquity and the commentators of Aristotle, to the inception of the humanists. The survey combines what is properly called intellectual history and philosophy proper. The historical aspect is kept to a minimum (as it ought to be in a philosophy book) without sacrificing salient features of the historical context in which the topic under discussion occurred. The philosophy, on the other hand, is more developed and Kenny has an emphasis on concept explanation, as opposed to explicating arguments; though he does do both at times.

Kenny is especially good at explaining the intellectual current of a given period and how such a current has bearing on the topic at hand, this is particularly seen in his discussion of physics. As such, the historical context of each topic and its subsequent development is presented thoroughly but briefly; however, little attention is given to the explication of any particular thinker's arguments on any given topics. For that reason, you will find little critical analysis of the particular arguments presented.

All in all it's an excellent work, written clearly and informatively, by a very capable philosopher. It's a good introduction for undergraduates at the freshman and sophomore level. But if you've had more than a survey course in medieval philosophy, you need something with a bit more depth.

A fine overview for students or non-specialists

This fine book, the second volume in Kenny's A New History of Western Philosophy, provides an overview of the major figures and issues in the philosophy of the European Middle Ages. Kenny takes an "intellectual history" approach in the opening section to provide necessary historical context and biographical information on the major figures he will be discussing. In the longer second part of the book, he turns to philosophical issues per se, tackling, in turn, "Logic and Language," "Knowledge," "Physics," "Metaphysics," "Mind and Soul," "Ethics," and "God." Kenny organizes this discussion around a who's who of the major medieval philosophers, including Augustine, Boethius, Avicenna, Anselm, Abelard, Aquinas, Duns Scotus, and Ockham. The chapters on ethics and God, topics so important in the Christian philosophical matrix of the Middle Ages, are very good, but it is the chapter on logic and language that stood out to me as being particularly interesting--Kenny highlights the ways in which medieval thinkers were anticipating issues in the philosophy of language that have been very hot topics among philosophers of the last century.

Kenny's book will be useful to anyone with a more-than-casual interest in philosophy or in medieval intellectual history. It may prove too difficult for absolute beginners with no philosophical background. Non-specialist academics and students, among others, will relish the book both for the helpfulness of its content and for the charm and grace of Kenny's writing.

Great overall reference!

I took classes in philosophy for years and I have to say that I was very surprised with this book. Kenny has a great knack for rephrasing the arguments of the Schoolmen in modern philosophical vocabulary without loss of substance. You'll be shocked by how relevant medieval philosophy really is; I'm a little angry undergrad students aren't made more aware of this material. This book accomplishes what every history aspires to: you close the book feel well-informed and freshly energized about the craft of philosophy.

The only minor downsides to the book are stylistic. A few strangely-worded cultural references make you feel like you're listening to 'Old Man Kenny' on occasion. More seriously, there are some instances where it's a little hard to follow the narrative voice, leaving you unsure at first where critical exposition ends and judgment begins. Thankfully, though, these defects are minimal in number and effect. Anyone with a moderate interest in philosophy will find this a worthwhile purchase.

Introduction

There is a revolution going on in enterprise networking. Until very recently, enterprises that needed to link computers in geographically dispersed locations had to build their own wide area networks (WANs). Usually this meant renting expensive and, by today's Internet standard, relatively slow frame relay circuits. A typical 56 Kb/s circuit could cost several hundred, or even over a thousand, dollars a month.

Today, the typical home computer user enjoys a broadband Internet connection having a 5 Mb/s download speed for a cost of about $40 per month. Commercial variants of this service, offering higher speeds and other amenities, are available for between $100 and $200 per month. Obviously, this significant increase in speed and decrease in cost represent a tremendous opportunity for enterprises, but they do introduce new problems.

The Internet is an open environment and, compared to leased lines, dreadfully insecure. Increases in bandwidth and decreases in cost are worthless if they mean that an enterprise's vital data can be intercepted by competitors, or that financial transactions are subject to manipulation by outsiders. This book discusses ways to overcome these problems by recreating the security of leased lines in a public medium such as the Internet.

The fundamental mechanism that allows us to have secure communications in the Internet is the notion of a tunnel. As we'll see, tunnels are a way of overlaying a logical or virtual network on top of a physical network. Once we have such a tunnel, we can secure it by encrypting and authenticating the network traffic that flows through it, thus recreating the security of private leased lines.

Of course, this simple description hides a substantial set of details and problems. We'll see that it's actually quite difficult to endow such tunnels with robust security. Much of the book is concerned with exploring solutions to these problems,and seeing why the successful solutions work and where the unsuccessful ones fail.

Packet-oriented, detail-rich book on VPNs

VPNs Illustrated is a great book for those wishing to understand network traffic at the packet level. Author Jon C. Snader was inspired by the earlier TCP/IP Illustrated volumes, and tries to reproduce the Tcpdump-style material found in Stevens' classics. The level of detail found in VPNs Illustrated easily outweighs any problems this book might suffer, so I recommend you read it for in-depth knowledge of VPN traffic.

The book is divided into three parts. Of these, I found Part I ("Background") to be of questionable value. The introduction (ch 1) should not have been a chapter, and ch 2 ("TCP/IP Overview") should be replaced by a reference to existing volumes on TCP/IP. The crypto overview (ch 3) could also be replaced by a reference to other books, although as a non-crypto guy I found it a helpful refresher. The last chapter in part 1 finally gets to more subject-specific information, covering PPP, IP-in-IP, PPPoE, GRE, PPTP, L2TP, and MPLS tunnels. I really liked reading the author's criticisms of certain protocols like PPTP and L2TP. He should have included Tcpdump traces of MPLS, since the other protocols featured packet data.

Part II included chapters on VPNs (ch 5), SSL (ch 6), SSH (ch 7), and "lightweight" VPNs (ch 8) like VTun, CIPE, Tinc, and OpenVPN. Some of this material is very deep and probably unnecessary for most readers. The author explains messages exchanged by almost all of these protocols, which is information I've not seen elsewhere. Some may consider these descriptions obscure, while others (probably researchers and developers) will appreciate the analysis.

Part III covers IPSec. Ch 9 ("IPSec") should be part of ch 10 ("IPSec Architecture"). The remaining sections thoroughly address IPSec (11: AH; 12: ESP; 13: IKE; 14: the future of IPSec). I think chapters 10-13 are the best IPSec material I've read. They made more sense than others I've seen, although the complexity of IKE made ch 14 difficult to follow.

Throughout VPNs Illustrated, the author is not shy about sharing criticisms of various protocols. This is extremely valuable. He also repeats sound advice on practices to avoid (like static preshared keys) or measures to consider (defeating replay attacks). Because he illustrates so many protocols, he compares and contrasts them to emphasize key points. He also frequently cites authoritative sources like Schneier and Ferguson.

To achieve a fifth star in a second edition, I would like to see the author incorporate my previous suggestions. I would love to see configuration files for all of his examples in the appendices. He can move existing examples out of the main text to improve readability. Every protocol should have a corresponding network trace analysis, and the traces should be posted on a Web site. I would also like to see a summary of his thoughts on what makes a great VPN protocol, and then his ratings for various implementations.

You won't necessarily be able to implement the VPN software discussed in VPNs Illustrated by simply reading the text. You will gain a great understanding of how they work, or sometimes, don't work!

why I don't like this book

I bought this book aiming to gain indepth understanding of VPN technology, but I was disappointed. The key chapter 4, for example, try to explain tunnel concept left and right, but it mixed the general encapsulation and tunnel, and the verbose wording didn't make it any clear. Using tcpdump trace to explain some of the field is both a blessing and curse, depending on how you look at it - I think the book is sort of strong in specific details but weak in overall conceptual pictures - however most of those details have been better documented in the RFCs.

Another example - when talking about generic tunnel skeleton using FreeBSD as example (ch 4.8), where some code snippets are presented, I feel some background and detailed illustration of flow/drawing is necessary to clear up the concept and why it correlates prevoius sections, but none given.

It may sound a bit harsh: though the author try to emulate Rich Steven's style and dedicate the book to him, but it is hard for me to say the end product can really live up to Steven's standard.

Advanced, takes networking books to the next level

NOTE: This book is not for everyone, if you have not invested at least 40 hours looking at network traffic, I would recommend you pass.

This book is zero fluff, it makes you want to spin up your scratch boxes and follow along. In fact I did just that, I have to switch to a new ISP that requires PPoE and I was always curious how that worked, the book gave me just enough of a clue to interpret what was passing in and out of my house.

The world has a new grandmaster of tcpdump and I have seem some pretty good ones over the years. Once I designed a T-shirt for a SANS conference with the hexadecimal output from a tcpdump; only we flipped it so it was running down the shirt and rendered in green, to resemble the matrix.

The packet was a DNS reply. In the additional records we said good things about SANS; after all, gotta market to eat. There was an error intentionally placed into the shirt and we designated a prize for the first attendee to find the error. A student walked by wearing the shirt and the "4500" in the hex field caught one of the instructor's eye. She followed him around murmuring, it is sideways, UDP, DNS, a reply, there are additional records, wait a minute that pointer entry is wrong. We watched in amazement, when she was done and looked up, the entire SANS faculty bowed to her. Because a mal-formatted packet can kill a packet analyzer the world needs people like Judy and Jon.

This is not a beginner book and Jon expects you to catch the 4500 stuff pretty fast. However, if you have followed the discipline of tcpdump instead of some packet analysis tool that spells out everything this book can take you to the next level.

VPNs Illustrated is rich in diagrams, including packet headers and state diagrams, examples of network traffic, and cartoons that explain the architecture of the system, or network. It is amazingly well edited, my only nit is on page 93, line 1 spacing off by one character.

The book has a strong linux bias, if you are a Windows person, you will be able to follow along for about 60% of the book using Windump, but you will not be able to use the tools or source.

This is the perfect reference for the person that knows networking and wants to really invest in taking it to the next level.

Finally, the dedication to Rich Stevens was over the top and heartfelt appreciated. I will never forget the man who taught me how to read a packet.

A GOOD book, and I'm not a druid.

I am a witch, not a druid, but I found several points of interest for myself in this book. He includes several very nice prayers for working with nature spirits, spirits of place, and the Fair Folk. He gives useful instructions for finding your local gods, the gods of local rivers and land features. He gives useful help on working with the Ancestors. These items are casually glossed over in many books on Wicca or Witchcraft, but not really explained, or given suggestions for.

The Basics In One Place

I don't know what book the first reviewer read, but he doesn't seem to have even vaguely grasped what The Solitary Druid is about.

Ellison lays out the basics of Celtic Paganism in a scholarly yet accessible way. He supports each of his assertions about Druidic beliefs and practices with citations from ancient sources and from archeology, and lays it all out in an outline that allows students to get started immediately with a Druidic spirituality.

Far from being duotheistic, the book gives advice for constructing your Druidic pantheon of worship based on the realities of the local land, and the spirits proper to each individual worshipper.

All clear on the Salisbury Plain

I liked "Solitary Druid," I felt empowered to go ahead and work the path without asking permission from control freaks in robes. Speaking of control freaks in robes, the author goes a little too far with the idea that, of course eventually, you'll want to join a club and here's the contact information. I thought that was lame. Solitary path working is legitimate; if I ever decide to join a club, I'll go shopping for another book.
