Growing up with the twentieth century, Alfred Barr (1902-1981), founding director of the Museum of Modern Art, harnessed the cataclysm that was modernism. In this book -- part intellectual biography, part institutional history -- Sybil Gordon Kantor tells the story of the rise of modern art in America and of the man responsible for its triumph. Following the trajectory of Barr's career from the 1920s through the 1940s, Kantor penetrates the myths, both positive and negative, that surround Barr and his achievements.

Barr fervently believed in an aesthetic based on the intrinsic traits of a work of art and the materials and techniques involved in its creation. Kantor shows how this formalist approach was expressed in the organizational structure of the multidepartmental museum itself, whose collections, exhibitions, and publications all expressed Barr's vision. At the same time, she shows how Barr's ability to reconcile classical objectivity and mythic irrationality allowed him to perceive modernism as an open-ended phenomenon that expanded beyond purist abstract modernism to include surrealist, nationalist, realist, and expressionist art.

Drawing on interviews with Barr's contemporaries as well as on Barr's extensive correspondence, Kantor also paints vivid portraits of, among others, Jere Abbott, Katherine Dreier, Henry-Russell Hitchcock, Philip Johnson, Lincoln Kirstein, Agnes Mongan, J. B. Neumann, and Paul Sachs.

A handful of figures contributed to the establishment of modern art in the U.S. museum community: Juliana Force (Whitney Museum of American Art), Chick Austen (Wadsworth Atheneum), Duncan Phillips (Phillips Collection), and, preeminently, Alfred H. Barr Jr. In a book that serves as both a biography of Barr and a textbook on the theoretical foundation of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, independent scholar Kantor focuses on the philosophical underpinnings of Barr's early life. He explores in great depth the philosophers, teachers, collectors, artists, and others who helped to form the mind of MoMA's founding director (Barr was a mere 27 at the time of his appointment). Barr's important and influential colleagues (Lincoln Kirstein, Agnes Mongan, Henry-Russell Hitchcock, Philip Johnson, and others from both inside and outside of MoMA) are placed in historical and personal context. He has held software positions at Argonne National Laboratory, Unisys Corporation, AT&T Bell Laboratories, Northrop Grumman, and XR Trading Securities.

Dirk L. Hugen is a graduate student in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Iowa. He previously worked as a signal processing engineer.

Well-written, well-structured, and meticulously edited book. This is one of those rare books you don't mind paying premium for (though relatively more expensive) and keeping in your library. It's essentially a primer on quantitative finance and trading with practical applications and codes. Good balance and explanation of theoretical and practical content.

A well-written book with tons of useful R code

I'm extremely pleased with this book! A great deal of R code is presented for statistical models relevant to trading and portfolio management and everything is well organized. The explanations are easy to follow and many visualizations are included with the examples. I rarely write reviews, but was inspired to do so on this occasion since this is one of the most useful books I've bought in a while.

Highly recommend this book for those who want to know how to implement theoretical models found in academic literature with actual real world data. The R code examples are specific and with good explanations. And the book covers a wide spectrum of models from time-series analysis to Bayesian probabilities and simulation modelling.

Since the late 1990s, a distinctive cultural practice has emerged in many cities: street art, involving the placement of uncommissioned artworks in public places. Street Art, Public City: Law, Crime and the Urban Imagination engages with those paradoxes in order to understand how street art reveals new modes of citizenship in the contemporary city. It examines the histories of street art and the motivations of street artists, and the experiences both of making street art and looking at street art in public space. It considers the ways in which street art has become an integral part of the identity of cities such as London, New York, Berlin, and Melbourne, at the same time as street art has become increasingly criminalised. It investigates the implications of street art for conceptions of property and authority, and suggests that street art and the urban imagination can point us towards a different kind of city: the public city.

Easily digestible - yet may need help to realize in action

If businesses could pick up their heads from operations long enough to grasp and implement these concepts, they would be far better off than today. Being able to stand back for a moment and be fully present to the social field and touch the emergent future is a skill that most leaders crave - yet rarely take time to do, or even know how to do. It might happen that a CEO or two picks up this book and "gets it" and may even be able to implement "it;" and there will be many who read the highly-understandable prose and nod in agreement, and place the book prominently on their shelf (probably along side "The Fifth Discipline"). Yes, it will likely take the outside-in perspective and the guiding voice of a consultant to fully integrate Theory U into the learning organization - something which Scharmer does.

To dense for me

Well first of all, I bought the Kindle version and there are no page numbers (for anyone who purchased this for a class like I did).

Second, it is very dense and very much a book that asks you to look into yourself every five seconds. I appreciate that it is supposed to give you a taste of what and how to look into yourself to be a better leader and really a better person, but I felt like the way it was described to me was more than I could absorb. I had trouble focusing in on anything because so many things were thrown at me at once. My classmates are very split on this. Some feel as I do and feel like the book is just too high level without enough description of what he is really trying to say, while others are feeling enlightened and feel super connected to it. I guess it just depends what kind of person you are, but I say good luck to you (especially to the fellow student who doesn't have a choice) because this book has really bored me. A lot of the insight makes connects to Senge and I found Senge to be a much more engaging writer.

Organizational change and mindfulness.

It seems to be an effort to develop a theory that is just not there yet. Wordy with a tendency to ramble, it lacks the focus that it needs. There are valuable, but somewhat standard sources cited which are found in much of the organizational literature. Essentially, there is an effort to connect "mindfulness" or meditation with the process of organizational change. While it may be a valuable idea, the process is not well defined at this point.

What is unique about this story is that it is not based on a breakup but is due to a simple dare. The heroine is changed only in that she realizes that she is bisexual as she still loves her boyfriend. The descriptions are very erotic.

Deeply moving and very funny

This play is dear to my heart. It's about a successful but lonely writer who, on a book tour to a city near her home town, has dinner with her old high school boyfriend and his wife, who is in the advanced stages of cancer. The writer connects immediately with the woman, feels that they could have (and should have) been friends back in high school, but is too frightened to visit her in the hospital when she suddenly takes a turn for the worse. As the play progresses the two women become more and more important to each other, and at one point the wife actually tries to wrest control of the story and tell it to the audience her way, much to the audience's amusement and our protagonist's distress. The play is an exploration of fear, loneliness, and the redemptive power of humor and friendship.

About the Author
R. S. KHANDPUR is currently Director General, Pushpa Gujral Science City, Kapurthala, Punjab. Prior to this, he was Director General, Centre for Electronics Design and Technology of India (CEDTI), an autonomous Scientific Society of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Government of India. He was the Founder/Director of CEDTI, Mohali, which is the first ISO-9002 certified organization of the Ministry of Information Technology.

Mr. Khandpur is the recipient of the 1989 Independence Day Award by the National Research and Development Corporation and IETE (Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers) for outstanding contributions toward the development of the electronics industry. He is Member, Board of Governors, Punjab Technical University; Director, Board of Directors, Electronics Corporation of Punjab; AICTE Distinguished Visiting Professor and Member, Vision Group on IT, established by the Punjab Government.

He has served as a scientist for 24 years in CSIO, Chandigarh, a constituent laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), as Head of the Medical Instruments Division (1975-1989) and Head of Electronics Division (1986-1989). He was the Project Coordinator for India’s first Medical Linear Accelerator Machine for cancer treatment, installed at PGI, Chandigarh, in 1989. Mr. Khandpur is a Member of the IEEE (Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers), USA; a fellow of IETE (Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers), and Member, Society for Engineering in Medicine and Biology, USA.

He has over 37 years of experience in R&D, technology development, technology transfer, education and training, consultancy, and management at national and international levels. Mr. Khandpur holds 6 patents of innovative designs, has authored 7 books, and has published over 60 research and review papers.

Poorly written; mistakes in formulas and physiology throughout the book

This book needed quite a bit of editing. There are mistakes in the physiology overview sections of the book. There are formulas that are flat out incorrect. The english is poor. There are statements near the end of sections in the book that are not expounded upon. There are figures with captions that do not explain them. This isnt just a problem here or there but a recurring problem throughout the entire book. This book was needed for a course in biomedical instrumentation but with all the errors throughout the book, I would not recommend this to any Professor thinking of using it.

For a long time, I have been looking for a book which could lucidly explain the relationship between engineering and medicine. Most of the books on Biomedical Engineering or Biomedical Instrumentation usually miss this information which a student or research scholar would like to have understand. This gap is elegantly filled by Biomedical Instrumentation, Technology and Application by Dr. Khandpur.

The book covers a wide range of equipment spanning direct patient care equipment, imaging technology, therapeutic techniques and instrumentation used in clinical laboratories. The book is profusely illustrated with a very large base of referenced material which would enable the readers in a specific field to go for detailed consultation. It is a commendable effort. I recommend the book to every student of Biomedical Instrumentation/Engineering.

Master in craft, Native to the core

A Native-born speaker, with a critical ear for nuances, picking up the sublime, he avoids the overdone caricatures that others do--as they invariably insult other native-born speakers, like myself & embarrass themselves! I bought the book to tone down my dialect, when need be, (voice overs) to be more aware of my speech, never to purge/mock myself of my identity. A great book--in concert with his YouTube videos you'll see he is a Master.
