About the Author

One such subdivision included the professions; access to which required a multiple choice exam. Enter, Prometheus Lionhart, and his gift of knowledge. This manual on test preparation in radiology is the first of its kind, and one frantically needed as medical examination joins the digital age with the abolition of the oral boards and the corresponding well-established preparatory methods. As Aristotle was a student of Plato, who ultimately surpassed his teacher in philosophic largesse, so too shall Prometheus Lionhart, as his gift of knowledge turns to wisdom, and that wisdom to the ability to repay student loans… maybe.

Decent book in bad need of an editor

First the good. I liked the style of this book. Easy to read vernacular and colloquialisms. It's like having a classmate explain things to you in a way that you can easily understand. And it seems to cover all of the topics that are fair game on the core. So it's definitely worth a read.

The bad -- (1) it strongly relies on "buzz words", especially the "gamesmanship" chapter; I don't know if the author appreciates that the test is very different from the USMLE or "writtens" and is "image rich" and not going to ever give you a descriptive sentence full of buzz words to run with. instead they will show you the picture. So it doesn't help if you associate "punched out lytic lesion" with gout -- you need to get there from looking at a radiograph of gout. As such this book would benefit from significnt addition of images. Or you need to use it in conjunction with the Internet and look up images as you read along (which makes it a much less quick read). (2) this book needs an editor, badly. Clearly the author was in a rush to get it out in time for the next offering of the core, but there's a typo or grammatical error on virtually every page. And the author apparently doesn't know the differences between the word "effect" and "affect" -- he pretty consistently uses the wrong one, which is a bit distracting.

So basically this is a very nice first draft, but hopefully there will be a cleaned up, more "image rich" second edition on the horizon.

Wish I came across this resource sooner.

I bought this one week before the examination, but wish I had it for longer. Used in conjunction with question banks and cases, it is a great reference to organize and consolidate your thoughts. Does a great job of explaining questions correctly. It is an excellent reference and I would recommend it to anyone studying for the core.

Many typographical errors should be fixed imo - but still the best source out there.

but I enjoy the style

This is a review book. Clearly not intended to be your only resource studying for the CORE. I'm not sure why it helps me that the author calls all the silly things we need to know "trivia" or "high yield random facts", but I enjoy the style. There is a high correlation with Rad Primer questions, my other favorite study tool.

Esmé Raji Codell has written a funny, hip diary filled with one-liners and unadorned thoughts that speak volumes about the raw, emotional life of a first-year teacher. Like Ally McBeal in the classroom, the miniskirted and idealistic Codell sometimes fantasizes her career is a musical. Her inner-city Chicago elementary school fades to black as the lunch lady strikes an arabesque or a struggling student performs the dance of the dying swan, all set to her interior soundtrack. (Tina Turner's "Funkier Than a Mosquita's Tweeter" echoes whenever her idea-stealing, dimwitted principal harangues her.) She's a rash, petite, white lady who roller-skates through the halls and insists that her fifth-graders call her "Madame Esmé." But it's not all fun and games: she introduces us to children who fling their desks and apologize in tears, and at one point, after reporting a disruptive student to her mother, who subsequently thrashes the young girl, she dry heaves into her classroom's trash can.

Codell's 24-year-old voice is loud and clear ("Serious gross out," she writes after the scorned principal hugs her), though, on the principle that kids say the darnedest things, she often simply repeats their comments for comic effect. Portions of Codell's diary of her experiences as a first-year teacher in a Chicago inner-city elementary school were first aired on WBEZ radio, in that city, as part of its Life Stories series. Subsequently rounded out into a book, the material still comes across like it's meant to be read aloud. Codell's voice carries the enthusiasm thatAas a 24-year-old hardcore idealistAshe brought to her difficult job. Hired for a brand-new school, she tells how she let her "na?vet?" work to her own advantage. She invented ways to engage her troubled, sometimes hostile students, relying on jerry-rigged visual aids, group craft projects, role-reversing skits and the like. Villains appear as well, such as her evil principal, Mr. Turner, a "homophobic, backward idiot." YA-With the freshness, brashness, and know-it-all zeal of a first-time teacher, Madame Esm?, as she asked her students to call her, jumped in with both feet for a remarkable year with her fifth-grade class. Her journal is at times bubbling with enthusiasm or bristling with anger. Codell is by turns tough and gentle. She witnessed two of her students being beaten by their parents after she discussed their classroom behavior. She feared that one student might shoot her. These youngsters' lives were incredibly grim, yet they read and wrote, sometimes advancing as much as two grade levels. Their teacher's success did not go unnoticed: she won the Dr. Peggy Williams Award, given by the Chicago Area Reading Association for outstanding teacher in the field of language arts. Readers are privy to the author's outbursts of anger toward the children and her moments of pride, but the intimacy of a diarist's self-examination/self-revelation is absent and the writing has a self-conscious tone. Madame Esm? sometimes seems a little too cold-blooded or a little too keen on her own brilliance, but then there are moments when her generosity and love and empathy toward her students shine and make up for the arrogance. In the end, readers find a teacher who cares.

it's a diary

I just finished reading this book, in one sitting. I was surprised to find the strong gut reactions that have prompted people to review it here. It is, after all, a diary, not a textbook on teaching methods or a technical report on the state of public education. While I am sure it was edited before publication, it is still a diary, and sounds like it might be very much the way it was actually written at the time. A diary is not written while worrying about what other people will think of it. It is a space for your personal feelings and experiences. After all, if Esme Codell was trying to glorify herself as a teacher, why would she leave in passages describing those days when she just doesn't care, or hates the children she's teaching?
This book is one person describing her experiences in her first year of teaching. Any new graduate, not just new teachers, leaving school with a degree in something they love, sure that they now have the knowledge and ability to change the world, will identify with Esme Codell. Whether or not you like her, or agree with her methods, that isn't the point of her writing. What she is sharing are her own personal feelings and experiences during her first year of teaching. How many other people out there would be willing to share their diaries, even edited, with others? Like her or not, you have to give her credit for what she did. After all, if we only read books written by people we like and whose ideas we agree with, it would be a pretty boring life!
Note for librarians: the part where the author compares hookers to librarians is a blast, and it's meant as a compliment too!

A real look into the first year of teaching.

To start out, this is not a textbook on how to be a teacher. It is not a psychological explanation of child behavior... it is simply the diary of a first year teacher. If you know that coming in, then be ready for one of the most eye opening books you'll read.

With all the talk about what goes on in our schools, it's real look into what it is like being "on the front lines" with the children in america.

If you have children entering school, this is an insight into what our teachers are going through (in some places). They are underfunded, overworked, and are expected to be everything to these children. As a parent, it helped me understand better all the challenges that my children's teachers deal with. I've found myself to be much more sympathetic now, and willing to offer more help.

The author is the kind of teacher that many of us had: one that cared enough to give more than just a routine class experience. Sadly, with all the constraints and demands put on them, I fear that we are going to push these people out of the profession if we don't help them soon.

That's not to say this book is all gloom and misery. In fact, the author documents very well the joys of teaching and emotions of trying to care for children that don't have the best homelife for education.

Please read this if you are a teacher, going into teaching, or have children in our public school education system.

One of the best books about teaching I've ever read. Through humor Esme' manages to capture a provocative look at the underbelly of a school's culture. Though not every school matches her description, there is something every one in education will recognize from their own experience. It is hard to be an Esme' in today's schools, but that is the teacher every parent should want for their children.

Super book for my elementary classroom!

As Maria read The Potato Chip Champ, the students were active participants in this story. They were making inferences, connections, and asking questions. They really related to the characters in the story. Most of all, it was really wonderful to sit back and see the seven and eight year old children tackle the concept of empathy.

This story really lends itself to 'putting yourself in other's shoes.' As a mother and a teacher, I often ask children, "How would you feel if..." This is a big question.

The Potato Chip Champ opens up the young heart and pulls on those emotional strings. The children become cheerleaders for the main character and begin to get upset when he's not treated nicely by one boy. Without being prompted, they naturally shared how the 'bully' should have reacted. When he (the bully) does have a change of heart, the kids were proud for him. They forgave him for treating the main character in an unfair and unkind manner. I was amazed with listening how their conversations were taking off - especially the boys. What a wonderful story to build classroom culture!

Relatable Story

The Potato Chip Champ shows one young boy struggling to extend friendship and make empathetic choices. It isn’t overly-preachy and presents a realistic portrayal of a child who is sometimes self-centered in his thinking and treatment of others. I look forward to using this book with my students as we discuss empathy and behaving kindly. I will be using this title with first graders, but I think older students would get even more out of reading and discussing it.

"Kid's Choice"

[[VIDEOID:mo36CY2O0T0IJ0I]]I had to share what my students thought about The Potato Chip Champ: they loved it! It is a great lesson in empathy, friendship and showing kindness. It also teaches kids that you don't have to "have it all" to be liked by others, it's what you are like as a person.

My mother, (L.S. Tuttle, a Southern Baptist, & a Spanish college professor) first saw & heard the author of this book, Dr. Harry Rimmer, D.D., Sc. D. in the early 1930's at a lecture series at Ridgecrest, NC. This book is basically those lectures, in print. (Everybody told him he should publish those lectures, so he did. It was first copyrighted in 1936.) If you have ANY interest in the subject of Creationism vs. Evolution then this book is a MUST READ!

A FAMOUS APOLOGETICS WORK BY AN EARLY CREATIONIST

Harry Rimmer (1890-1952) was an American creationist, apologetics writer, and evangelist; he wrote a number of books, such as MODERN SCIENCE AND THE GENESIS RECORD, Dead Men Tell Tales, etc.

This book was first written in 1936 (and was republished in 1973). Rimmer wrote in the Foreword, "The matter contained in this volume of apologetics has been delivered in lecture form before hundreds of audiences and student groups, totalling many thousands of auditors... The author has revised this material and has put it in this permanent form, that it might be available to libraries and schools that require this type of apologetics."

Here are some additional quotations from the book:

"We would unhesitatingly state that when men of science agree unanimously upon any correlated body of facts and do not change their conclusions or agreements concerning these facts for several thousand years, we will then be willing, if necessary, to discard the Bible and accept their conclusions instead!" (Pg. 13)
"How did Job know (Job 38:7) that at the dawn of creation the morning stars sang together... At one time it was futilely attempted to evade this question by suggesting that this was poetic imagination on the part of Job... (but) through the marvels of modern physics we have learned many things about the tonal value of light." (Pg. 127)
"At any rate it may easily be seen that a man would have no difficulty remaining alive for three days and three nights in an air chamber as extensive as (a whale's), containing 686 cubic feet of space." (Pg. 183)

Nice book on creating good habits...

When I first bought this book, I though it was a book solely focusing on how to be more patient with others. It is however also a book on how to develop patience in order to develop more grit and implement the habits to become more successful in life. This is because the “underlying attribute for long term goal achievement is patience”.
The book is quite detailed and the story-telling is built up very nicely so you follow the author closely in his argumentation. The book offers several assignments for you to become more self-aware and aids you in reaching your goals. I enjoyed the book even more as I understood the complete picture, and think it has a great value

This guidebook is excellent and helpful. By the help of this book I have learned about how to become a patient. Inside of this book I have found tons of helpful and effective techniques for developing self-discipline.
Actually, last few months I was in trouble and lots of anger problems. My elder sister suggested me about this book and by reading this book I am pleased. By reading this book I have understood about how to maintain my focus through trial and tribulations. This book also taught me about how to become proactive impatient and develop mindfulness. GREAT BOOK

I might be a calm person and have some patience but in many occasion I can’t control my temper or get nervous. This usually ends up with me yelling at my children just for inconsequential things and when I calm down and think about it again I realised that I was over reacting. I really wanted to learn to have more patience, to have more control of my temper especially with my own kids. This book was very helpful in this. It helped me to learn how to build new good habits to replace the bad ones.
