A Carefully Crafted Rip-off

Have you ever received a colorful package of materials from IMP (International Masters Publishers)? Has it amazed you with the company's generosity ("Enhancing your Mind Body Spirit gives away over $1,000,000 in free gifts!"), enchanted you with a feeling of mystery ("The secrets of Mind Body Spirit can now be yours...") and tickled you with a feeling that you're just plain special ("Congratulations! You've already been awarded a Free Gift Package.")? The deal sounds good enough. After all, it couldn't hurt to get a free sample valued at up to $47.95 and a free gift if you reply quickly. It only costs $9.95 for the next set of cards, so why not?

This product, along with IMP in general, is an example of manipulative marketing scams at their best. Throw away the solicitation you received now before you get sucked into spending well more money than you bargained for. Sure, each packet of 12 cards "only" costs $9.95 (more like $12 after postage and tax), but what they don't tell you is that there are some 99 packets in the collection. Even with their "savings" options, this means the entire set will run you up around $1000, with each two-sided color card costing $1 a piece. Given that you can buy better books covering the same material for a significantly less amount of money, steer widely clear of IMP's scam. The little extras they throw on don't make up for the inflated cost either. The essential oils, for instance, are always diluted in a carrier oil and of generally poor quality and while I liked some of the incense they sent, five small sized sticks is hardly generous.

It's really too bad that the product is such a scam to collect. After collecting about a dozen packets myself, I found a seller on eBay offering the completed set for about $130. This, I thought, was a pretty reasonable price, and it gave me a chance to evaluate the content on its own merits aside from the unfortunate marketing. There really is some great material in the set. The pages have the visually-oriented in mind and are full of beautiful color pictures, artwork, and diagrams. I particularly like the posters, whose beauty sometimes makes them suitable for wall decorations! While lacking authority given the absence of authors and a bibliography, if you're discerning, there are plenty of gems to mine from this product in spite of its occasional factual errors. The breadth of topics includes: aromatherapy, herbal remedies, stress relief and good sleep, healthy eating, a massage course, a meditation course, a yoga course, a feng shui course, spiritual healing, world healing traditions, friendship bonds, spiritual sexuality, interpreting your dreams, an astrology course, a tarot course, a palmistry course, fortune telling traditions, using crystals, charms and symbols, nature magic, casting spells, Wiccan traditions, spiritual experiences, the craft of mediums and clairvoyants, and encounters with ghosts. That's a lot of stuff, with some sections are longer than others. If I were rating the content alone, I would probably give it three stars (slightly above average). If you can manage to get the entire set for cheap like I did, you're bound to find something that you like. Otherwise, stay away from IMP; this set is nice, but not that nice.

Expensive but delightful

I've been collecting the cards for the Mind-Body-Spirit kit for over a year now, and I love it. On the downside, it's going to end up costing me QUITE a lot--at $11/month, I'll easily have spent over $200 by the time my collection is complete. On the other hand, I was given the option to collect the cards faster and easier--three times as many, for about $17/month, and I opted against it. Why? Because half the joy is the monthly arrival of the new cards! If I got three times as many in a month, I wouldn't be able to linger over them the way I can with a smaller collection per delivery.

And I *do* linger over them. The photography is beautiful, and each topic gives you a comfortable introduction, or overview, of the topic, whether it's a particular astrological sign or the uses for lemon in healing and magic. If you want in-depth explanations of certain topics, this kit may not be for you. But if you appreciate having a beautiful, glossy-paged overview of scores of topics, giving you a better idea what you might want to research, consider this kit.

As a bonus? At least every other delivery comes with an extra treat of some sort--a CD of relaxing music, a collection of sandalwood incense, a chunk of amethyst, etc.--which has some relation to one of the cards in that delivery.

Bottom line? If you just want to save money and get a book, avoid this. But if you want a reminder approximately every month (I think it's more like every third week) of your interest in exploring ghosts, chakras, healing herbs, and many other areas of mind-body-spirt consciousness? Consider this beautifully arranged kit.

Nice Reference, but SO expensive...

After canceling my membership with IMP, I tried to find the set through an online auction. That's right. I said SET! There are so many inserts...a COMPLETE series would NEVER fit in ONE binder. Please do not be duped or allow yourself to be lied to by a second-hand seller claiming that ONE binder/"book" contains THE ENTIRE, COMPLETE set. The "Natural Healing" section alone can fill up one binder!
If a seller fails or refuses to list all sections, chapters and page insert numbers they are either a.) too ignorant to know what they have (not the orginal owner) or b.) extremely dishonest and hope you will buy one binder that they "think" is complete.
Please be VERY careful when dealing with these individuals.

So...why did I cancel my subscription to IMP? I was getting duplicate inserts and items in the mail AND I was being double charged. Another reviewer mentioned buying the set outright. If I had to do it over, that is probably what I would have done -but I never saw IMP advertise this option.
I hope this helps someone avoid the mistakes that I made...

The photos, layout and design is really nice. Right now I'm weighing my options to decide whether to start over and just buy the set outright. I'm just not sure that for the price, it is THAT nice. :)

How to operate for MRCS candidates and other surgical trainees is an exciting addition to the market for the junior surgical trainee. Uniquely combining a DVD and handbook companion, it provides a step by step guide to more than 40 common operations likely to be encountered during core surgical training. The handbook is aided by intra-operative images highlighting the salient anatomy and surgical points. Whilst notionally aimed as a helpful addition to those studying for the Intercollegiate Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons examination this compilation has much more scope than that. With the time constraints on training with the European Working Time Directive (EWTD) the opportunities to have seen, in vivo, a wide range of procedures has become more limited. Therefore, the desire to be fully prepared when attending operating lists has heightened. How to operate provides a solution to this conundrum. Its step by step approach allows the trainee to be, at least, familiar with the techniques surrounding the operation prior to setting foot into theatre.

The DVD provides a comprehensively narrated guide to operative practice. With 10 hours of footage and practical advice to the common pitfalls that may be encountered in the operating theatre. Unlike DVDs aimed at Higher Surgical Trainees, How to operate does not profess to show operations without challenges. Rather, it tackles the realities of the situation that one is likely to encounter.

This compendium is firmly based at the Core Surgical Trainee. It covers a breath of surgical procedures likely to be covered during the 2 year rotation. These are namely; general, vascular, urology, orthopaedics, upper gastrointestinal, breast, and colorecatal, along with appendices covering basic surgical skills and theatre etiquette.

There are inevitably some admissions, for example the lack of neurosurgical or cardiothoracic procedures. Furthermore, certain specialties fare better than others with orthopaedics and ENT covered somewhat more scantily than the general and urology sections of the DVD and book.

It is surprising that a similar compilation is not already on the market. Those battling with their surgical exams have utilised Acland’s Anatomy for many years, and whilst their value cannot be negated they are a little dated. Furthermore, How to operate has the added benefit of demonstrating the surgical anatomy as it will be seen in the operating theatre. It will never replace comprehensive operative bibles in the mould of Farquharson’s Textbook of Operative General Surgery but nor does it purport to be. Rather it provides the junior surgical trainee with a firm grounding. On this note, How to operate will have limited benefit for the higher surgical trainee as they will be familiar with the procedures covered in their parent specialty. However, it opens the possibility of further additions to the series focussing on individual surgical specialties aimed at Registrar level trainees. “This is a unique and useful addition to the bookshelves (and DVD players) of those progressing through basic surgical training. Detailed step-by-step videos of common operations are each accompanied by a chapter in the book detailing the procedural steps, coupled with operative pictures, radiographs and anatomical diagrams to illustrate the important learning points.

The videos provide a clearly narrated guide to operative practice, pitched for the junior trainee starting out in the operating theatre. The narration tackles the realities of operations and their difficulties with useful tips and a common sense, occasionally humorous approach not found in more senior and specialist titles that often seem to present a more polished version of reality than one encounters in your own operating theatre.

The procedures videoed cover the breadth of a typical core surgical training rotation, including general, vascular, urological, orthopaedic, upper gastrointestinal, ENT, breast, and colorectal procedures. For example, within upper gastrointestinal surgery the videos feature gastrectomy, splenectomy, gastrojejunostomy, open cholecystectomy, and thoracotomy.

It is perhaps surprising that no-one has already put such a training package together. Many have used Acland’s anatomy DVDs for MRCS revision, and although sub-specialist operative training DVDs do exist these are limited in scope and are prohibitively expensive.

It must surely have been a labour of love to assemble and edit these training videos all together, and the author and production team are to be congratulated on bringing this to life as well as they have. In the modern multimedia age this could well become as essential as Kirk’s seminal text on basic surgical techniques was to previous generations climbing the slippery surgical ladder.

Given the broad coverage of disparate specialties, from orthopaedics to urology, the package will perhaps have limited interest to more senior trainees and one wonders whether dedicated editions featuring each of the nine surgical specialties will be forthcoming in future. Certainly there would be demand for this. Similarly, the level of the accompanying book is no replacement for operative surgery bibles such as Farquharson's or Kirk’s, but neither does it set out to be.

Excellent. And Long Overdue. Like having a 24 hour available surgical teacher

This excellent book and DVD package is reflective of how modern surgical training in general surgery should be - and usually isn't.

No pomp. No ceremony. No bunch of professors slapping each other on the back & out professing each other with academic detail you don't need to operate.

Just an excellent how-to manual for a surgical trainee in general surgery. Something you might read as you stroll in on call to do your first appendectomy, hernia or gastrectomy - and something you learn back to front for final general surgical training exams. 40+ operations - covering most of the biggies & the littlies - are presented clearly and in stepwise format - as you would do them in 2011.

It is in a detailed DVD and written format by a current trainee - and by his clear teaching surgeons.

I think a second edition should probably seek to expand the number of operations covered - particularly in the areas of HPB (especially lap chole & pancreatic surgery, bypasses etc and perhaps plastic surgery (tendon repairs, grafts) and neurosurgery (burr holes, ICM cather insertion), transplant (port insertion, removal) and urology (stones). But as it is - an excellent first edition - and I strongly recommend it to new trainees. Learn this well before Kirks or Chassins or anything else. In a word - Excellent.

YES YES YES! I LOVE IT.

I first came across this author through Instagram and his post. His post intrigued me enough to look deeper into him and his work. I just received my book today and already in love. It reached my soul and spoke the words I needed to hear. This is a perfect book to give to yourself or others. For $10 and some food for the soul how could you go wrong! I plan on buying some copies to give to my sister's and mother, and will write a small message to them inside and help spread such needed love.

"L" is for Lacking

Other reviewers have compared this one to "H." They're right. This is an "on the road with the bad guys" adventure. No real mystery here, and other than a few interesting scenes, not much worthy of note.
The supporting cast that has been weaved through the other novels is noticably absent from this book. Maybe they were working on other projects. The book suffers from this, mainly because the replacement players are not nearly as compelling or, frankly, fun.
By the time Kinsey ends up in Kentucky, you will find yourself saying "Who cares? Get back to Santa Teresa."
All in all, it was a disappointing read, annoying so because my prior experience with these books means that you cannot skip the bad ones.

L is for Lovin' It!

This is another good story in the line of alphabet mysteries by Sue Grafton. Her few "detours" from great writing in previous "letters" seem to have been a minor bump in the road and she now returns to a good plot and strong characters.

I have to admit that one of my favorite characters in this series is Henry Pitt, Kinsey Millhone's landlord and friend. I enjoyed the Henry who wrote crossword puzzles and tried them out on Kinsey before he sent them in for publication. I enjoyed the Henry who always had something baking in his kitchen. And many times I have wondered why some sexy senior citizen hasn't snagged this wonderful catch of a man!

This story gives us a little more insight into Henry than we've seen in the past. Henry convinces Kinsey to help a friend of his on a simple matter - she needs to show that Henry's friend served in the military during World War II so he can be buried as a veteran. Such a simple request and it should have a simple solution, but as we've seen with Kinsey in the past, nothing is an easy task, so the plot thickens...

The family of the deceased is too busy fighting among themselves to be much help to Kinsey. Then an old friend shows up and gets attacked at the dead guy's apartment. Once again we're on a race to see what's around the next corner for Kinsey and to find out why the government has no record of this veteran serving his country.

There's a little bit of mystery, but more suspense in this book. And more laughs than we've seen in the past with Grafton's other books. I'd recommend this easy read to anyone wanting a few hours of enjoyment as it's definitely one of Sue Grafton's better books in this series. I only hope she will continue with this quality and not hit any more bumps that throw her off to only mediocre writing!

"L" is for Look for another

Of the Sue Grafton's series, this one didn't have the same impact as her earlier books. I was disappointed! The plot developed slowly, and at times reminded me of a bad 'made for T.V. movie'and the characters (other than the familiar aquaintances) lacked "character". After I began reading "L", over a year ago, I put the book down and didn't have the desire to read it until recently. I enjoyed her first books and hope that "M" is a better read.

An Informative, Helpful Resource on Porn Addiction & Recovery

The pervasiveness of pornography in our culture is obvious and widely discussed. Pornography is primarily marketed to and consumed by men. But why? How does it work? And how can men find freedom? Dr. William Struthers, Associate Professor of Psychology at Wheaton College, has written a very interesting and informative book on how pornography hijacks the male brain and (more importantly) how the very impulses (the drive for intimacy) which propel men toward pornography can lead them out of depravity and into holiness.

The book is divided into two sections: How Pornography Works and Healthy Masculinity and Sexuality. Each section has four chapters. Chapter 1 addresses our culture's saturation with porn. Pornography is hard to define, and therefore hard to legally restrict. Those who produce it claim to be exercising their first amendment rights. Their materials are not harmful, they argue, since all participants are consenting adults. Moreover, they say, you can't prove that porn causes men a host of social, psychological, emotional, and spiritual problems (to say nothing of the problems for women). With the Internet comes access, affordability, and anonymity. In addition, the Internet provides opportunities for communication (chat rooms) and connecting with others (hook up sites). Chapter 2 discusses porn's corruption of intimacy. Rather than sexual intimacy between a husband and wife in a maturing healthy relationship, a man learns to focus on the physiology of sexual sensations detached from any significant relationship. This brings shame, increasing loneliness, and less libido for their wives (or girlfriends). Chapter 3 expands on these consequences. Chapter 4 goes into how a man's brain is wired and how porn use creates neural pathways in a man's brain that train his process of arousal.

The next section begins with a chapter on what it means to be made male in God's image. It interacts with the previous chapter in terms of the brain's healthy or unhealthy sexual development, but in less technical detail than chapter 4. Chapter 6 is on masculinity. Men learn masculinity from an older male figure. Dr. Struthers says the masculine voice affirms, grows as it is challenged, and defends and protects loved ones from evil. Chapter 7 discusses the male need for intimacy, and how many men, by not enjoying appropriate non-sexual intimacy with other male friends, are more susceptible to the allure of porn. Lots of great insight in this chapter on how a man can grow in tenderness and intimacy with his wife and others. Chapter 8 is on rewiring and sanctification. Here is where Dr. Struthers gives specific insight on how "neural pathways can be rewired" so that men's natural drive for intimacy can lead us toward holiness rather than depravity.

With a background and interest in science, the whole idea of the book was interesting. But even if you never were interested in science or the brain, the second half of the book would be very helpful to any man seeking greater sexual holiness. Here's an excerpt from the last chapter:

"Imagine that you could be neurologically "enslaved" to purity rather than porn. Enslaved to seeing the dignity of each individual rather than their utility to you. This is the distinction between the journey toward sanctification and the journey toward depravity. As you travel farther along either road, you pick up momentum and it becomes harder to turn around. The farther down the road you travel, the less opportunity you have to deviate from the road as it narrows. The road to depravity leads into the heart of hell and yields isolation. The road toward sanctification, however, leads into the heart of God and yields freedom from temptation."

What's unique about this book is the emphasis on the physical (brain chemistry) aspects of the addition to porn. But don't assume that Dr. Struthers leaves any room for men to "blame it on their brains." No, he writes, "We are still responsible for our actions...The knowledge that we get from Scripture and science should not be used to deny, justify, rationalize, minimize, normalize or celebrate the exercising of brokenness."

Social and personal effects of pornography really are more devastating than I thought

The promise of Wired for Intimacy is that it can speak to the problems of pornography both from a Christian/theological/moral perspective and a neurological/psychological perspective. Some people are drawn more to one type of argument or the other. But I think it is important that there is an attempt at both sides. Without the theological, there is just a pragmatic science. Without the science, it is one person's theological system against another.

The first half of the book progresses from definition of pornography, to the social issues that occur because of pornography, to the neurological effects on the male brain from exposure to pornography. This is the heart of the book. The main issue identified neurologically is the potential for creating sexual triggers that are based more on pornography than a sexual partner. And the earlier a person is introduced to pornography the more likely that sexual response will become dependent on pornography and create sexual dysfunction when sexual response is desired with a human partner.

Sexual response for a male is more complicated than I would have imagined. There are a variety of chemical, hormonal, and other neurological responses that usually occur in the progression of arousal through to orgasm. But when pornography is used, several of the steps are skipped. When the brain becomes used to skipping steps, the ability for a man to have a fuller sexual response becomes limited. (There is a lot of neurological science in the book that I am skipping.)

For readers that are Christians I think that chapter 2 (Corruption of Intimacy) is important. But for readers that are non-Christian (as most of the negative reviews on Amazon indicate) there is a need for a discussion that is based in science but uses more abstracted moral argument that is not based solely in Christianity. Even counselors that are Christians and pastors could use assistance in helping people that may be starting at a different theological point. That being said, as a Christian, the fact that pornography inhibits the ability to hear the Holy Spirit I think is important (but that really only works if pornography is an addiction and the case has to be made scientifically that there is an addiction.)

The second section of the book is about how to move to `sanctification'. This section was useful as a starter, but really is just a start. I think the most useful parts of the second section are when the discussion talks about the difference between being a physically adult male and an emotionally adult man. There is a difference and many articles and books have been written about it, but this is a good summary of the difference but focused around how pornography can be involved in stunting the emotionally development of men.

I have heard many speakers talk about the dangers of pornography, but usually it is abstract moral discussion. The specifics of why pornography (especially when used by teens and young adults) can affect the long term sexual activity, even within a monogamous, otherwise healthy marriage relationship. I think that real and serious discussion of this material should be a part of every church youth group.

The biggest weakness of this book is how it focuses on men. That is an editorial decision and I think is fine. But I wanted much more discussion of the differences between male and female response. Instead, most of it was simply reduced to a description of the male response and then saying women are different, but no real discussion about why.

Well-researched, well-written, long overdue

According to the latest numbers I've seen, 53% of Christian men consume pornography and 37% of pastors say it's currently a struggle (stats from [...]). Clearly, according to the numbers, it is a much bigger problem than is being talked about, and being a pastor of a church virtually guarantees that I (and many of our readers) will deal with someone in the cross-section sooner or later. Thus William Struthers has done the entire believing body a service in writing Wired For Intimacy: How pornography hijacks the male brain.

Perhaps the most interesting and helpful information Struthers provides is on the fact that pornography acts on the male brain much like drugs (such as cocaine and heroin) do. Both cause the body to release dopamine and, with repeated use, the body develops a tolerance and needs greater stimulation to get the same dopamine high (thus the law of diminishing returns is equally true of pornography). Just as a path in the forest becomes wider and more defined as more hikers use it, so do the neural pathways with repeated pornography use until, as Struthers puts it, one has created "a neurological superhighway where a man's mental life is over-sexualized and narrowed . . . they become the automatic pathway through which interactions with women are routed".

Struthers, however, resists the temptation to color pornography use in particular and sin in general as simply a problem of the mind. He writes a book that plays to his strengths, but balances his expertise with the proper biblical picture of sin and temptation. While this book is not for everyone (obviously the subject matter is explicit), given the stats cited earlier, I cannot recommend this book enough for every Christian male, especially those in ministry.
