Narrative Nonfiction At Its Finest

When writing a piece of World War II literature (narrative nonfiction, in this case), there are two main difficulties: 1. Finding a topic that hasn’t already been covered numerous times; and 2. Making said topic interesting enough to write a book about. In the case of “Sabotage”, author Neal Bascomb hits the nail on the head in both regards, turning a story about a relatively little-known operation into the epic tale of survival and heroics that it actually was.
For a basic plot summary, the book tells the story of Nazi Germany’s race to acquire atomic weapons, and the subsequent race by the Allied forces to stop that from happening. Top Axis scientists had discovered that a strong supply of “heavy water” would be key towards unlocking the atomic potential, so the Vemork plant in Nazi-occupied Norway began production on exactly that. In response, the British Special Operations enlists the help of a group of Norwegians to make calculated strikes on the plant, what with their knowledge of the terrain and survival skills. As per the usual, the task becomes much more gargantuan and vitally important with every passing moment.
Easily the hallmark of “Sabotage” is that it is marvelous narrative nonfiction of the highest order. It is clearly based on real-life situations (Bascomb put in a ton of research to be as accurate as possible in this regard), yet reads every bit like an action/adventure/survival war thriller. Bascomb knows exactly when to stick to the facts and when to editorialize a bit, making for an engaging experience that is ever so much better than a strict
bio/memoir or textbook telling of the events.
Also, I think this book is important because it sheds light on a key operation of WWII that perhaps is a bit unknown among the general population (the non-amateur historians among us). I had never heard of this mission before, so I was fascinated by the drama in how it all played out. The truth here is indeed stranger (and more exciting/nerve-wracking) than fiction could ever possibly be. These are stories that need to be told, and need to be told in a way that promotes understanding.
While this edition of “Sabotage” is marketed towards the YA market (there is a more fleshed-out “adult” version as well), I honestly don’t see why this version can’t be enjoyed by all-comers too. I am far from my teenage years, yet I found myself still completely swept away in the events as they were unfolding.
All told, “Sabotage” is an impressive work of narrative nonfiction that manages to inform without being boring but also excite without straying too far from the facts. A perfect mix, in other words. I could see teens all the way up to WWII vets picking this one up and enjoying it for differing reasons.

Great for science and history buffs

Studying history seems to be the exact opposite of zooming out on the universe. Just when you think you have zoomed out the furthest, you find out that there is another star, another planet, another galaxy that is bigger. And this will, of course, never stop because the universe is expanding and we cannot know everything about anything that is infinite. It is the same thing with history. You can always go deeper into one specific topic and, sure, my American history class and my world history classes have both taught me about World War II. Yes, my physics and chemistry teachers talked about the political affiliations of Heisenberg and Bohr, but never was I taught the ins and outs of the vital heavy water production plant that proved to be so important to the war effort --- until SABOTAGE by Neal Bascomb, that is. The jacket of this book describes it perfectly as a “page-turning nonfiction at its best.” However, I will often read books all in one sitting, and this book was a little difficult to follow in the beginning. There were too many things happening at the same time and I couldn’t follow how one mission or event related to the larger scheme of the novel. There were times I almost forgot what this book was about. The book did get more focused as the story went on, which helped me understand more about the characters and enjoy it more.
Personally, this was a cool read because it covered so much of modern, nuclear and atomic history. It has opened up a whole new world for me --- one filled with books about the history of science. For someone who is looking to possibly combine the two subjects into a career path, it was really informative for me to see how the two worlds of science and history collide. I highly recommend this SABOTAGE to any history buff or science nerd like me --- you won’t be able to put it down!

Heroism for the Fatherland

In August 1945, atomic bombs were dropped on Japan bringing World War II to an end. But the United States wasn't the only nation pursuing the development of atomic weapons. Germany also had a program, and was perhaps closer than we realize to achieving that goal - except for a small handful of Norwegian resistance fighters.
When Germany invaded Norway, they instituted martial law and took a great interest in Vemork, an industrial producer of 'heavy water' - a key ingredient in atomic testing. Several Norwegians who had escaped to Great Britain, such as Leif Tronstad, Knut Haukelid, Einar Skinnarlad and others, were trained and mounted operations to destroy the manufacturing capacity of Vemork. Although there were setbacks, delays, and even disasters, the efforts of these men who loved their country were probably essential to preventing Germany from developing a weapon that could destroy entire cities.
This is the shorter young-adult version of The Winter Fortress: The Epic Mission to Sabotage Hitler's Atomic Bomb. It is an easier read and filled with photos of the people and history of this act of sabotage. And it's a great read - especially for those who want an abbreviated history of the events. Initially I counted myself in that group, although I think I would have enjoyed the fuller version more. While this is an excellent book, particularly for the target audience and those who aren't used to dense histories, the narrative sometimes sounds a little simplistic. But it's still a very inspirational story and I enjoyed it.
