A treasure to have in my collection

How revolutionary Rameau is. Surely he was writing music without any kind of agenda and so his ideas shine without adulteration. This edition of his complete works for keyboard is a joy to own. If I could only have one book of music this would be it. I say this as a pianist. This is important because if I were to play this music on a harpsichord it would be unsatisfying and almost incorrect. It is clearly edited with the piano and it's sustaining abilities in mind. Saint-Saens edited this music and has romantic influence in his editing. I don't think the purist would like this edition very much. The ornamentation is handled with much liberty but only to more suit the piano. If you're a musician who plays everything and thinks you have heard it all you're in for a surprise when you play this music. Just when you think Rameau has started to settle into a typical, lifeless, established baroque styling of a motif he comes out of nowhere with such shocking revelation that you aren't sure what century the music came out of exactly; questioning if you're actually playing a French baroque composer or Scarlatti or Beethoven or Bach or some neo-baroque composer. It is best to not assign any labels to this music and just play it. It will speak directly to your musicality and emotional sense and provide a great deal of joy and satisfaction. You will wonder why you haven't been playing this music sooner or why no one is talking about it. My recommendation is when you first get this music, play the Sarabande on pg. 66 first. Those arpeggios are to die for and it speaks for the taste of the entire book, not to mention those brave and lush harmonies. You will instantly be hooked. Claude Debussy said "Rameau is the greatest french composer ever to live" and I agree. Rameau's music is all gold, no filler. You need to own this book.

The music is beautiful. But the e-book presentation is so small I had to buy reading glasses.

Beautiful music and an historical feast for the ears. But the music appears to be presented as graphics images. One image corresponding with each page of sheet music. The problem is that it displays a full page in each e-reader page turn and these, then, are very SMALL compared to a normal sheet music presentation. For best results, I need to put the device into portrait disposition. But even then, it's quite a struggle to read many of the notes, especially the accidentals applied to appogiaturas. These are just about impossible to see. I've never used reading glasses before. But with the purchase of this book, I had to go out and buy a pair. Only with the reading glasses am I able to see that the accidental at top of 2nd page is in fact a 'natural' mark.

He has an excellent mastery of chromatisism offset by a firm grasp of counterpoint.His music reflects a wide variety of styles,from a Couperinesque simplicity to an almost Bachian complexity.he often incorperates folk-like melodies,and elaborates them in a form of consumate mastery, bringing them up from their humble beginings and transforming them into works of consumate mastery. he is the fully worhty developement of three hundred years of french musical advancement,and certainly the successor to all the genius therin.

Now, in Management Challenges for the 21st Century, Drucker looks at the profound social and economic changes occurring today and considers how management--not government or free markets--should orient itself to address these new realities.

Drucker sees the period we're living in as one of "PROFOUND TRANSITION--and the changes are more radical perhaps than even those that ushered in the 'Second Industrial Revolution' of the middle of the 19th century, or the structural changes triggered by the Great Depression and the Second World War." In the midst of all this change, he contends, there are five social and political certainties that will shape business strategy in the not-too-distant future: the collapsing birthrate in the developed world; shifts in distribution of disposable income; a redefinition of corporate performance; global competitiveness; and the growing incongruence between economic and political reality. Drucker then looks at requirements for leadership ("One cannot manage change. One can only be ahead of it"), the characteristics of the "new information revolution" (one should focus on the meaning of information, not the technology that collects it), productivity of the knowledge worker (unlike manual workers, knowledge workers must be seen as capital assets, not costs), and finally the responsibilities that knowledge workers must assume in managing themselves and their careers.

Most of what we've seen from Drucker over the last five years has been autobiographical reminiscences, reissues of earlier classic works, and collections of conversations and writings. This new title is being promoted as Drucker's first major book since Post-Capitalist Society (1993). Even so, it is more a collection of themes--albeit grand ones--that have occupied Drucker during this last decade of the century. And, as Drucker acknowledges, he has already "pilot-tested" much of this material in the form of major articles in Forbes, California Management Review, and Harvard Business Review. His overriding concern is the future challenges we face together as a society. Drucker divorces management from business, arguing that it is the "distinguishing organ of any and all organizations." He examines the concept of productivity as it applies to knowledge workers. Finally, in a crowning finale, he stresses the new demands that will be placed on the individual, concluding that workers will outlive the organizations that employ them--putting responsibility on each of us to "manage [our]selves." The Most Timely of Peter Drucker's Books

MANAGEMENT CHALLEGES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY is a breakthrough work, even for Peter Drucker. Through 6 impressive essays, Professor Drucker sets the agenda for the next several decades, for every organization and individual. He begins by pointing out that the way most people think about management is all wrong, and immediately needs to be changed. He outlines the needed changes. He then picks the key strategy issues that will strongly affect all organizations for the next 50 years. Next, he points out that we live in turbulent times and that one must lead the changes that one's organization must make so they occur faster than for the competition. There is no choice for any organization, except to fail to survive. From there, he points out that we have information TECHNOLOGY, but very little information worth looking at on the devices the technology brings us. He goes on to define what must be done to create the right information. In a remarkable section, he then tells how to create knowledge worker productivity (something he has said in the past that no one knows how to do). Finally, he provides a remarkable essay on how to get the most out of yourself, for yourself. These essays were previewed in leading publications, and substantially improved from the originals. There is no repetition of his work and thinking from earlier books. This is like finding a whole new Peter Drucker. I especially loved the new examples that he included, as well as his historical references that only Peter Drucker can make. YOU ARE MAKING A BIG MISTAKE IF YOU FAIL TO BUY, READ, AND APPLY THE IMPORTANT LESSONS OF THIS BOOK. If you read only one book by Peter Drucker, read this one! I was especially pleased to see that he addressed the stalls that delay organizational progress such as the old habits reinforced by tradition, unwillingness to address the new through disbelief, poor communications at all levels (he states the rules that you must follow to be a better communicator and be more effective), needless interactions fostering mindless bureaucracy, the temptation to procrastinate (standing still in front of a truck about to run you over is a mistake you will not repeat), avoiding the unattractive key issues of your organiztion (he recommends doing the dirty jobs yourself for several weeks a year in order to understand how to improve), and failing to set high standards. As always, the book is filled with powerful questions that you can answer for yourself in order to accomplish much, much more and feel great while you do so. Read and apply the lessons of this book and you will have many more 2,000 percent solutions (achieving 20 times the usual results with the same resources or getting the same results 20 times faster).

A beautiful management mind!

Peter Drucker has a beautiful mind, forever fresh and overflowing with innovative thoughts. This book, published just as the master of management began his tenth decade of life, shows him at his perpetual best. The text carries with it the sweeping knowledge, deep experience, and astute analysis that a reader might expect from Drucker at this point in his life. But you will find no timid conservatism, no holding on to safe ground here. Drucker has made a lifelong habit of leading the way in business thought and this book confirms that he just can't help himself.
In contrast to the typical business book which is 200 pages too long, every chapter and every page of Management Challenges for the 21st Century relentlessly tweaks the noses of bad assumptions while focusing our attention on the future. Drucker pulls together diverse trends and forces to map out the truly new management challenges. His first chapter, "Management's New Paradigms" argues that organizations (or what ManyWorlds calls "business architecture") will have to become part of the executive's toolbox, yet we continue to operate on outdated assumptions about the role and domain of management.
Fortunately much recent management thinking explicitly challenges one assumption pulled apart by Drucker: The idea that the inside of the organization is the domain of management. This assumption, says Drucker, "explains the otherwise totally incomprehensible distinction between management and entrepreneurship". These are two aspects of the same task. Management without entrepreneurship (and vice versa) cannot survive in a world where every organization must be "designed for change as the norm and to create change rather than react to it."
Although Drucker is intent on uprooting old certainties and focusing organizations on constant change, he does not leave the reader without a compass. In the second chapter, "Strategy-The New Certainties", Drucker says that strategy allows an organization to be "purposefully opportunistic" and explains five certainties around we can shape our strategy. While other writers have addressed a couple of these, too little attention has been paid to some of the inevitabilities analyzed here, including the collapsing birthrate, shifts in the distribution of disposable income, and the growing incongruence between economic globalization and political splintering.
The book's third chapter, "The Change Leader", gives Drucker's unique perspective on the need for 21st organizations to be change leaders. "One cannot *manage* change. One can only be ahead of it." Change leaders have four qualities. They create policies to make the future which means not only continual improvement but *organized abandonment* - a practice still almost unknown in practice. Contrary to typical company reactions, change leaders will starve problems and feed opportunities. For Drucker this means, in part, having a policy of systematic innovation and - in tune with recent calls for new budgetary practices - having two separate budgets to ensure that the future-creating budget is not stopped off in difficult times.
Strong as the first chapters are, I found the other chapters of this book even more incisive. The reader may come away with the sense that many of Drucker's points are obvious, but will realize that they only *became* obvious after hearing them. In his chapter on "Information Challenges", Drucker gives his own, historically-rich, controversial, and provocative take on our current information revolution - the fourth such revolution, he says).
The man who coined the term "knowledge worker" has no shortage of fresh thoughts in the chapter on "Knowledge-Worker Productivity", and has profoundly important things to say in the final chapter on "Managing Oneself". Management Challenges for the 21st Century is, of course, essential reading for aspiring manager-entrepreneurs in these confusing times. As for aspiring business writers, I can only say: Read it and weep!

About the Author

Dr. Richard Lent facilitates meetings around the world in business, nonprofit, and humanitarian organizations. He has worked as well with dozens of local civic, religious and community groups of all sizes. Rick also delivers workshops and presentations on a structural approach to better meetings. His focus on understanding meeting structures began in 1995 and has been a major part of this work ever since.

Leading Great Meetings: How to Structure Yours for Success is his second book. In 2012 he published the Meeting for Results Tool Kit that provided an early version of the approach now revised and expanded in this new book.

An excellent read and a wonderful study guide. Good reading for those in and out of the field.

The first thing you need to know is I'm a very tough judge of books. I have one simple rule for buying any non-fiction book - How quickly did I learn something from it? A book goes back on the shelf if I don't learn something by page 10.
I was learning before finishing the first page on this one.
My fields of study aren't Dr. Lent's and still this book provided takeaways that I could directly apply to my own work.

Immediately useful ideas

I have been reading this book on my commute today. As an organization development consultant and incoming secretary to a nonprofit board, I thought this book would be helpful. I was right! I am only on page 25 and already it has come in handy. Dr. Lent offers lots of goodies to put to use immediately.

Practical expert advice for engaging meeting participants and getting results

One summer when my kids were young I loaded them into the car for week at the beach. We had swimsuits and towels, beach toys, a drum of sunscreen, sun hats that would never make it out of the cottage, bicycles on the roof rack, and enough kid snack food for a week. Cranking Don Spencer’s Australian animal songs on the car stereo, we sped south. Then we motored south. Then crept south. By the time we got to southern Rhode Island, we were crawling south, willing the car to just make the cottage, where I could park the kids with grandma and find an emergency room for the car.

A lot of us plan meetings like I planned my car vacation. We load up the agenda with everything that people could want to discuss. We invite everyone who could possibly have a view on the topic. We labor over the choice of snack items. (Gluten free? Locally sourced?) But we pay much less attention to the structure of the meeting – the vehicle that will get us to the decisions our business needs.

Enter Dr. Richard Lent. Rick has spent a career “under the hood” of meetings. He’s demonstrated many times in his own work that meetings can produce satisfying results even when the meeting topic is contentious and the meeting participants are wary of each other. In Leading Great Meetings, readers learn from Rick’s decades of experience in translating organizational-development knowledge into real-world meeting success in places as varied as his small Massachusetts home-town and major international organizations.

This book has many great features, but three stand out for me. This is the first book I’ve read that provides practical, do-able tools for keeping participants engaged in “virtual” meetings even when your organization does not have the newest on-line meeting tools. Tools like dividing meeting responsibilities among participants, visible note taking with free on-line resources to keep options organized and the conversation on-track, “going around the room” to increase participants’ involvement, and even having photos of all participants on-screen, are simple, elegant ways to counter the entropy that ensues (In-box? Facebook?) when participants aren’t face-to-face.

Second, the book gives straightforward, practical advice to cure the “time creep” problem that is ubiquitous in meetings and that makes us dislike them. If people dread your meetings because they drag on, that alone is a reason to get Leading Great Meetings.

Third, the design and organization of Rick’s book is superb. It succinctly diagnoses most common meeting problems, describes why they happen, and offers a set of tightly curated tools to resolve them. A separate section at the end of the book summarizes the tools with labeled pages that get you instantly to the tool you want.

If your meetings are good already, you might dip into Leading Great Meetings for some quick tips to make them great. If they’re more like my vacation vehicle (overstuffed and about to veer off course), this could be the most helpful business book you read all year.

About the Author

DR. SANDEEP CHATTERJEE is a seasoned technology expert and business professional with over a decade of hands-on contributions as a technologist, consultant, entrepreneur, and author. He is Chief Technology Officer of a startup focused on Web services delivery and management, and also serves as a Chief Technology Consultant for Fortune-100 and major not-for-profit organizations including Hewlett-Packard and ACCION International. Sandeep served on the Expert Group that specified the worldwide standard for mobile Web services, and was the lead of Hewlett-Packard's Web Services Mediation Platform. He was also Entrepreneur-in-Residence at FidelityCAPITAL, the VC arm of Fidelity Investments. Sandeep holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where his research in mobile systems was selected as one of the top 35 inventions in the 35-year history of MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science.

DR. JAMES WEBBER is an architect and Web Services fanatic at Arjuna Technologies where he works on Web services transaction and Grid computing technology. Prior to joining Arjuna Technologies, he was the lead developer with Hewlett-Packard working on their BTP-based Web Services Transactions product--the industry's first Web Services Transaction solution. An active speaker and Web Services proponent, Jim is a co-author of the WS-CAF suite of specifications. Jim holds a B.Sc. in Computing Science and Ph.D. in Parallel Computing both from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Web services technologies are fundamentally changing the software industry, making the role of enterprise IT organizations more strategic, and recasting the software vendor-consumer relationship. Web services are also being hailed by CEOs, CIOs, and CTOs as the next-generation vehicle for driving topline growth and controlling bottom lines. But, simply jumping on the Web services bandwagon won't lead to corporate success. Web services are simply a platform; how companies implement a solution using this new technology will determine their success, and ultimately their return on investment (ROI). Web services platforms provide the functionality to build and interact with distributed applications by sending eXtensible Markup Language (XML) messages. Additional technology layers are constantly emerging, others are being refined, and still others are being discarded. The platform is essentially a moving target.

So as not to be left behind, companies are building and deploying their applications while work on the underlying platform continues. And, as with any industry standard initiatives, which require building consensus, the Web services platform will remain a work in progress for some time.

How can you build any meaningful application, let alone mission-critical enterprise applications, on such a platform? If you are a developer or an architect charged with building Web services or applications that consume Web services, you have to know where the platform is today, and where it is going. Otherwise, the endless pit of application rewrite and maintenance overhead will far outweigh any benefits that can be garnered from this promising new technology.

Real world, enterprise Web services and applications cannot be developed by simply reading through the SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) or the WSDL (Web Services Description Language) specifications. Developers must understand a number of different standards and technologies, and more importantly, their inter-relationships as well as best practices for their use.

Consider an e-business application that requires interaction between multiple partner Web services. Understanding SOAP and WSDL gives developers the ability to write Web services and consume them within their application. But, how must the application be architected to be reliable in case some Web services become unavailable? How can an application be written to seamlessly scale to support new Web services from a growing list of strategic partner companies? What are the best practices for developing mobile Web service applications, and how can individual Web services be created to support quality-of-service (QoS)? How can transactional guarantees or atomic coordination between multiple, independent Web services be supported by applications? And, how can all of this be done securely so that corporate and individual information and intellectual property are safeguarded?

In this book, we focus on how to develop Web services and applications within real world enterprise environments. We describe not only the vanilla Web services platform consisting of SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol), WSDL (Web Services Description Language), and UDDI (Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration), but also build upon this to include the other technologies, standards, and emerging standards that provide support for transactions, security and authentication, mobile and wireless, quality-of-service, conversations, workflow, interactive applications and portals, as well as systems management.

We discuss the opportunities represented by Web services and, more importantly, describe best practices and architectural patterns for building enterprise systems that position you and your organization to most fully leverage those opportunities. We do not summarize any one Web services standard, but instead provide a sufficiently thorough discussion of all of the critical technologies and standards, as well as their inter-relationships, that are necessary for building enterprise Web services and applications. Nice Vendor-Neutral Description

Interested in designing a Web Service? But you have never done so? Well, texts have started to appear; the latest being this one by Chatterjee and Webber. It has several merits. Perhaps the strongest is that it does not take sides in the J2EE versus Microsoft's .NET debate. Wait a minute, you might say! You have heard enough about Web Services to know that it is vendor and platform independent, much like HTML, which is an industry standard. So how could a book on Web Services NOT be neutral?
Well, consider how HTML is a standard, but different browsers render an HTML page slightly differently. And HTML is pretty simple, remember. Now consider that Web Services is far more complex. The XML messages going to and from a WS are vendor neural. But, as is made clear by the examples in the book, the XML does not describe the processing logic implementation on a WS provider, by deliberate design, to make things loosely coupled. But if that provider has, say, a transaction capability, then you can get into the nuances of implementation.
Thus, if for example you get a book on J2EE WS, that may be fine. But it may also be hard to disentangle the truly neutral design details from the necessarily hairy implementation.
The neutrality of this book should be a design virtue to you. Look, if you are going to build a WS, you probably already have preferences for .NET or J2EE (or something else). So, indeed, do get a WS book specific to that platform. But consider this book as a good second opinion, and much cheaper than hiring a consultant.

More stuff less chaff !!

Consider this - Web Services and SOAP is perhaps the only recallable evolution of technology that has witnessed the single largest involvement of standards bodies and industry bellwethers. The result? A puzzling plethora of proffered protocols that continues to confuse both sideliners and early adopters every day.

While managers are finding it increasingly difficult to understand the direction, developers are craving for clarity, consistency and a unified approach for WS adoption. "Give me the tools" they cry every day, while they keep adding to their "To Read" list a handful of new acronyms every week. The big question is, when can we build Rome, if at all?

With a gentle and brief (thank god!) introduction to underlying concepts such as SOAP, XML and UDDI, authors start talking about broader concerns - conversation, transaction, security, workflow, QoS and everything in between. While accentuating nuances of evolving standards and guessing the future trends, authors offer strategies, patterns, and tips on pitfalls to avoid. They skirt around the political interoperability issues around J2EE and .NET and focus purely on the standards. Architect's Note included at the end of every chapter makes title justified.

An implementation of WS-based ordering system presented as a case study concludes the book by bringing it all together through excellent step-by-step approach.

Although almost a year old, this book can be a survival guide for people in the trenches and the ROI-Savvy managers as well. It helps you tell the wheat from the chaff.

This is a surpringly well written, well organized book. Just about all of the major web service technologies are covered in just enough detail to give the reader a good understand of how they work and why they are needed. In addition, there are lots of simple, yet complete code samples that prepare the reader for detailed specifications and API documentation.
The book also includes background coverage of fundamental XML concepts, such as XML schema. It is worthwhile as a reference alone.
This book is much more than SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI (although these are covered in detail). This book includes advanced topics such as Web Services Conversation Language (WSCL), workflow, and transactions. The examples are easy to understand and complete.
Overall, this is a professionally written book for professionals.
