Calamity lurks around every corner, these stories suggest, and you never know when fate will smite you—only that it will. Davidson catapults his characters (sex addicts, fighters, gamblers and drinkers) into ingeniously grim situations that test their will. In "Rocket Ride," a young man who loses his leg to the orca he performs with in a marine park show tries to rebuild his life, in part by attending meetings of the Unlimbited Potential support group, which is full of substance-abusing amputees who wonder if karma's to blame for their plights. In the gruesome "A Mean Utility," a normal-seeming couple—an ad exec and his wife, a nurse—breed and fight vicious dogs, while in the sad "On Sleepless Roads," a repo man leaves one night's job not with the camper he was supposed to reclaim, but with the destitute man's hamster and guinea pig, which he brings home to his disabled wife. Davidson, 30, is a fine young writer with a keen sense of the absurd and a bracing, biting wit, but his focus on gore may keep many readers from appreciating his obvious talent. (Nov.)

5 Star Quality Short Stories.....

An outstanding collection of short stories!

"Rust and Bone" is everything that it is hyped up to be, from all good reviews here on Amazon.com, to the praise on the front cover from Chuck Palahniuk (author of "Fight Club"), to the praise on the back cover from Bret Easton Ellis (author of "American Psycho).

There are eight excellent stories in the book, a few related by the most minor factors. The story topics range from boxing, magic, dog fighting, a repo man, a basketball prodigy, a aquarium show whale rider, to a hardcore sex addict!

A Mean Utility (5/5 stars, gut wrenching stuff, an eye opener)

A Knockout First Book- MUST READ

When you see a book by a young new author has received acclaim from literary heavyweights like Thom Jones, Chuck Palahniuk, and Bret Easton Ellis (and Clive Barker, and Peter Straub, and...well, you get my point), you may tend, like me, to be initially excited but then approach the work with an air of guarded skepticism. After all, we live in an era of disproportionate hype where talk show hosts sell us fraudulent memoirs and publishers care more about marketing platforms than a book's content.

But please, drop your guard this time. Forget the hype. Just buy this book and read the whirlwind opener (also titled "Rust and Bone") and try to tell me this Davidson guy isn't the real deal. And realize that the "hype" is anything but- people are excited because Craig Davidson has delivered an utter knockout of a first book.

The cover might indicate that this is a collection of hard-edged pugilistic tales, but Davidson's range goes far beyond the confines of the ring. In fact, only three of the stories deal centrally with organized combat (boxing, dog fighting, kickboxing) and Davidson proves adept at putting you right in the middle of the sweat and fatigue, the blood and the shattered bones. His delivery of the fight material is a wonderful mesh of passion and sharp technical description that had me cringing one moment, thrilled the next. And in each of those stories there are emotional conflicts that make those battles in the ring mean so much more than the pounding of flesh on flesh.

The other stories deal out different shades of conflict- a man's desire to live vicariously through his son while battling alcoholism, a man coping with losing a limb to a killer whale, magician's children dealing with an absent father, a sex addict coming to terms with his desires, and a repo man trying to reclaim the wife he's losing to a degenerative illness. Each deals with its characters in a way that renders them surprisingly sympathetic. Two of the stories, "Rust and Bone" and "On Sleepless Roads," were so emotionally effective that they lingered in my mind days after reading them.

Davidson's prose is lean and efficient with the occasional stylistic flourish (in particular when describing settings) and his story setups are intriguing. His characters-the husbands and wives and brawlers and strugglers- have heart. And the sense of hope in defiance of all struggle that Davidson leaves you with make this a Must Read.

Familiar Turf with Some Sparkling Moments

Canadian writer Davidson kicks the literary door down with this debut short story collection, which features tough-guy topics as boxing, dog fighting, mangled bodies, sexual addiction, and repo men. The results are rather hit or miss, with some of the stories grittily effective and others wandering their way to weak endings. Five of these previous appeared in Canadian lit journals "The Fiddlehead", "Event", and "Prairie Fire", and the stories are mostly set in Ontario, a locale fairly interchangeable with the upper midwestern U.S.

In general, the best bits of writing occur in those stories in which Davidson is able to show off his skills at writing combat. The title story has some particularly vivid parts, depicting a bare-knuckles fighter who earns his living on an illegal underground circuit. I don't find boxing particularly interesting, but Davidson's blow by blow account of a fight is riveting. In "Life in the Flesh," a boxer who once killed a man in a fight now lives in Thailand where he trains promising boxers sent to him from the States. When a cocky kid shows up in Bangkok, the trainer tries to keep him focused but can't keep him from taking on a local Muay Thai champ. Again, the setup isn't the greatest material, Davidson veers awfully close to the stereotype of Bangkok, but the fight itself is great stuff. "A Mean Utility" delves into the underworld of dog fighting via two unexpected protagonists -- a middle-class white advertising executive and his wife. Experiencing fertility problems, they pour all their attention into their dogs, and the man pushes a young dog into a fight, only to see every father's nightmare unfold before his eyes.

Other stories are rather less compelling. "The Rifleman" is a riff on the typical fanatical father who pushes his son to become a basketball star. The alcoholic father is utterly pathetic, and his son's disdain oozes from the page. "Rocket Ride" is about a young man bitter about losing his leg while working at a marine park, but just peters out. "Friction" is thirty aimless pages about a man whose sexual addiction cost him his family and job, and has drifted into the porn industry and therapy groups. The longest story is "The Apprentice's Guide to Modern Magic," which examines a pair of siblings whose magician father abandoned them as children. And of course, when they track him down years later, as adults, satisfaction and closure prove difficult to come by.

The best complete story is "On Sleepless Roads," in which a sad man leaves his disabled wife at home to work his repo man gig. When he shows up to take an RV one night, he encounters the ad executive from "A Mean Utility", now fallen on tough times. Rather bizarrely, the ad exec is trying to film a children's TV show in his garage, using live animals. The odd couple bond over a night of beers and filming, and the story ends with the kind of beautiful and darkly comic moment that one wishes were more present in the rest of the stories. On the whole, while there are sparkling moments here and there, much of the collection feels like warmed over Chuck Palahniuk -- and indeed, Palahniuk provides a suitable cover blurb, with Thom Jones, Bret Easton Ellis, and Peter Straub weighing in on the back. And in fact, that provides a pretty good indication of the intended audience for this collection.

Truly Awesome!!!!!

Oh my, what can you say that already haven't been said about this writer and her wonderful writing. I had been waiting and waiting for this book and of course, she never fails to come through!!! This is the kind of book you read that takes your breath away and have the readers on the edge of their seat with anticipation. Ms. Miller, I applaud you on your great imagination and smooth writing which articulate each and every character personalities. The interactions and intimacy between these two characters (Luka and Alex) made me swoon and laugh out loud. When the twist and turn regarding Alex habit was revealed a softer side of Luka that we previously had not seen was shown. His dominant alpha side was still there, but a tender loving side entered the picture when he found Alex in the condition she was in...Their sexual tension was off the charts and oh so steamy. I am surely head over heels in love with Luka, he has a special personality and try's to hides his talent with his quirky remarks and quick comeback to Mischa...Everything that was addressed is very crucial to the storyline and was inevitable to where it was eventually going. I highly recommend this book to everyone and will be looking forward to reading RED!!!

Fantastic!

So you're telling me a witty tattooed enforcer is all about his Boss' little sister? And you say she's mouthy, pushy, and is flying under the radar, taking advantage of all the avenues a mafia princess can access? Wait, these two are love struck and are going to fight tooth and nail before they get their baggage sorted out? I'll be honest with you, I hadn't finished the first Bratva novel, and I regret it, since I swallowed up this story and the remaining books once I finished this story.

Alex is falling down a rabbit hole that promises to eat her alive. She's into anything to numb the pain. Her older brother, Mischa, is the Bratva Boss and has more drama roaming him at any moment that it's become usual for Alex to fall through the cracks. No one sees her spiraling. Expect for Luka. He's been around long enough, his heart has grown warm to the girl lost in the shuffle, and when her acts begin to threaten to hit his Boss, he does the only thing he can think of; he attempts to force Alex to help herself. The man learns French for her! PEOPLE! FRENCH!

I'm all about this story, I've read it 2x and I wouldn't shoot down another. It has a bit of everything, plot twists, revenge plots, murder, sex, you name it, you'll get it. Honestly, book 4 is basically book number ONE for me. I loved it, and for the few days I draw it out, I live it. If you don't pick this up, seek therapy.

Series keeps getting better and better

The Volkov Bratva series continues with the story of Alex Volkov, sister to Mishca, who is now the Pakhan, and Luka, the Enforcer of the Volkov Bratva. Luka has had an extremely bad life up to the time of meeting Alex filled with nothing but pain and torture that he has kept hidden from almost everyone in the Bratva along with what he actually did and who he was. Alex has her own demons in that after Lauren got her revenge on several members of the Bratva she was the one who unfortunately ended up being hurt the most of all as no one seemed to realize that although she was the innocent person in all that happened yet she was left all alone from this. This drove Alex in her loneliness to make some very bad choices including drugs, alcohol and men that only wanted to use and hurt her in her spaced out state. Luka had been warned away from Alex by her brother but was having trouble staying away as he cared for her and when he saw she was spiraling downwards he stepped in to try to save her. So much happens in this book kidnappings, torture, punishments, murders, betrayals,really some really hot times between Alex and Luca as well as some other very terrible events take place. This book made you want to quickly turn the pages to find out how everything would play out. As you read you cannot help but feel Alex's emotional pain she is going through and Luka's not only emotional but deep painful torture and suffering he has gone through at the hands of so many evil individuals. Great story London, I cannot wait to read other books from you.

Brett Green is the editor of HyperScale (www.hyperscale.com), an online model magazine established in 1998, and a highly respected aviation modeller. He has published two books on the colours and markings of Luftwaffe aircraft: 'Augsburg's Last Eagles', on the late-war Messerschmitt Bf 109, and 'Stormbird Colors' on the Me 262. For Osprey Publishing he has written Modelling 2: 'Modelling the Bf 110' in 1/48 scale, Modelling 11: 'Modelling the P-47 Thunderbolt', and co-written 'US Army Fighter Modeling' in the Masterclass series. P-40 modelling help

A good cross section of projects. The finishing (specifically painting) techniques could be expanded, or even a separate chapter on painting and weathering techniques added to the book. I found the book invaluable to doing a quality build of a 1/48 P-40.

A good reference book for modelers of WW-II aircraft

I'm currently in the process of building two models representing the American Volunteer Group (AVG) who flew an early model of the P-40 against the Japanese Army Air Force at the start of WW-II. This book provided me with valuable information about building an accurate model of the aircraft flown by David Lee "Tex" Hill, one of the aces of the group (and one of my personal heroes.

Most kits of the P-40B are out-of-scale in one part or another, and this book helped me to model the one I'm working on; modifications of several contours, mainly the horizontal stabilizer, were required. In addition, paint colors can be a problem as these early aircraft were to be sent to Great Britain before being co-opted by the AVG for Flying Tiger use.

Something to have in your writing toolbox

Ok, guys and gals, this is not a book to read from cover to cover. This is a book to flip through when your character feels flat.

Instead of staring at a blank page trying to find ways to describe your character, K. S. Everhart has this list that will jump start your fingers and fill that blank page in no time.

You will not sit there and answer every single question. You will find questions that jump off the page and are easy peasy to answer about your character.

This is a list of questions you haven't yet thought of and some may lead to questions not printed out for you.

In this day of many reviewers complaining about flat characters, even if you've already written your story, it is worth flipping through with your character in mind. A carefully worded insinuation in the the right place can add depth to an otherwise lackluster character.

And if you have just an inkling of an idea, creating the character to drop into the story may lead you on paths you never expected. The secret to a good story is to let the character tell it, not force the character into a mold.

My only wish is I kind of wanted to know how to create more of my own questions. I did want to have a way to explain how to create a similar list. But the book is better than what I have seen on the internet so it was worth the money, and some questions could inspire others to write stories amd are good character questions for interviews of characters. It has been a while since I posted a review. I recommend it. It will be helpful even to chart character goals and flaws if you answer the questions or take your time to develop the story you have written more deeply. It would help in thspat respect for revising and maybe even in the process. I have but some of these, on backstory questions.

The only reason I gave this book a 3 was because the Duke, the hero, had lost out on two women AND in this tale he falls in love w/ a woman who cannot bear children. I thought the Duke had suffered enough!

I read it through in one sitting. Staying up late when I should be sleeping to prepare for a busy day tomorrow, is perhaps the truest compliment I can give. I loved the characters, and the overall writing was top notch as always.

Advanced book on speed training

This is a very good read. I learned a lot. However, it is quite complicated. It is not for beginners, if you like calculus and speed training. You will like this book. I must say it is still a good read. I just prefer a more simple approach.

Lots of good info but tough to read

I'm getting some good stuff from this book but there are a significant number of things that don't make sense or seem contradictory. I'm thinking that some of the author's intent has been lost in translation. I still feel it is valuable, but tough to read. I am a physical therapist. It may be harder to read for novice exercise enthusiasts

The best material and information to come along on running mechanics. At first seems confusing or different, but makes all the sense in the world once you examine it. Running is a very complicated process. Attended an 8 hour lecture 4 years and got me hooked.

About the Author

Gareth Holman, PhD, is research scientist and associate director at the Evidence-Based Practice Institute in Seattle WA. He was Bob Kohlenberg’s last graduate student at the University of Washington. At EBPI, Gareth designs, builds, and tests tools and trainings to help therapists feel more connected and do better work. Gareth is the lead trainer for FAP Level 1 online trainings and chairs the executive committee at the University of Washington Center for the Science of Social Connection.

Jonathan Kanter, PhD, received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Washington in 2002. He is currently assistant professor of psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he directs the Depression Treatment Specialty Clinic which conducts research and provides behavioral therapy services. Kanter’s research focuses on understanding the psychopathology and treatment of depression from a behavioral perspective, with particular emphasis on functional analytic psychotherapy and behavioral activation. He is currently funded by the Center for Addictions and Behavioral Health Research to conduct research on reducing the stigma associated with depression and by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Research Growth Initiative to develop and evaluate behavioral activation for Latino depression.

Mavis Tsai, PhD, is cofounder of functional analytic psychotherapy (FAP) and director of the FAP Clinic at the University of Washington. Mavis has an international following as a trainer, consultant, and clinician.

Bob Kohlenberg, PhD, is cofounder of FAP and professor of psychology at the University of Washington.

Infamous for his earlier book, “The Wandering Who?: A Study in Jewish Identity Politics” (2011), Gilad Atzmon has collaborated with Italian cartoonist and interior designer, Enzo Apicella to produce “The Definitive Israeli Lexicon, A to Zion”.

Since the publication of “The Wandering Who?” Atzmon has been vilified and dragged through the mud of slander by the Jewish/Israeli establishment, accused of anti-Semitism and being a self-hating Jew. Born in Israel of Jewish parents, and having served in the IDF, Atzmon became disenchanted, to say the least, with Israel and its policies in Palestine and against the Palestinian people. He moved to England to follow a career in jazz music as a talented saxophone player, and put himself through university where he studied philosophy and earned a masters degree.

Atzmon has been on the road playing concerts and lecturing on the meaning of his book for a number of years, and despite the criticisms of it, it still sells widely and has had an enormous influence on public opinion of Judaism and Israeli policies. The same public who were moved by Walt and Mearsheimer’s book, “The Israeli Lobby”, are moved by Atzmon.

The book under review is, on the surface, of a much different nature. “A to Zion” is intended to be a book of humor, attacking the shibboleths of Zionism. But, as we know, Jewish humor is directed at itself and is often self deprecating. Atzmon uses it often in his lectures and conferences. And in his travels he has picked up a lot of this humor and translates it in this book as jabs against Zionism. A short aphoristic book of only a hundred or so pages, it is designed to alphabetically define certain aspects of Zionism and Zionist personalities in one-liner jabs. Interspersed throughout are delicious cartoons by Apicella, a cartoonist I have never encountered before this book. His drawings are clever enough to be editorial cartoons in any newspaper. They probably are in Italy.

Here are just a few of the one liners that grab attention:

* Aliya - Jewish immigration to Israel; initially it was supposed to solve the Jewish question. In practice, it just moved it to a new location.

* Bar Mitzvah - the moment when the male Jew accepts that his foreskin is not going to grow back.

* Humour, Jewish - diverts attention from the problematic symptoms by means of self-deprecation.

* Zionism - a false promise to take the Jews away and to give the goyim a break.

Please, run out and buy a copy of this book. It will knock a hole in all your prejudices.

Gilad Atzmon: The Jewish Ambrose Bierce?

Gilad Atzmon has been accused of being a "self-hating Jew" and a "self-hating Israeli." In this book he asks, "Is there any other kind?" Gilad and co-author Enzo Apicella offer a trenchant and hilarious critique of Jewish identity and identity politics, disguised as a lexicon that echoes the sardonic humor of Ambrose Bierce's Devil's Dictionary. This brutally honest and incisive take on ethnic humor may not please Abe Foxman's acolytes, who are appalled by the truthfulness of Joel Stein's "Who Runs Hollywood? C'mon!" and other schticks that tell too much truth. Funny how such people don't seem to mind Mel Brooks' The Producers making fun of such ostensible Jewish traits as greed, Germanophobia, and a fast and loose relationship with truth. Maybe it's because Brooks exudes affection for his (ostensibly) greedy, Germanophobic, lying tribe; while Atzmon is disgusted by the genocide in Occupied Palestine, and believes that a certain pathological tribal narcissism in Jewish culture is partly responsible. for that ongoing atrocity. So Atzmon's humor, unlike that of Brooks, ultimately critiques rather than celebrates Jewish culture. Since Jewish culture, more than any other culture, is off-limits to criticism, Atzmon is violating a major taboo by pointing out its foibles and failings. Anyone who defects from the genocidal Zionist project and calls it out, as Atzmon has, is going to take a lot of heat; throw in this kind of taboo-shredding cultural critique and you have a formula for getting yourself verbally lynched by the small-minded guardians of tribalist political correctness. Atzmon has suffered his share of verbal lynchings and this book will probably draw more from the usual humorless nitwits. That will just make the rest of us laugh even harder.

10-Stars! A Must Read!

I was sure I wrote a review on this, but recently I found I didn't. I bought and read it four years ago and have been talking about it ever sense. Three years before that, I went through a period where I read The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness, The Dream Manager (Audio CD), a bunch of Patrick Lencioni's works beginning with The Three Big Questions for a Frantic Family (Audio), then The Five Temptations of a CEO (Audio CD), "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team," The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive, and there were others about General Patton: General Patton's Principles for Life and Leadership, and Alan Axelrod's "Patton on Leadership" to name a few. During this whole time I kept hearing about this book, "First, Break All The Rules." It came highly recommended, but I did not even like the title. That's not how I think! Finally, I gave in and found this to be a groundbreaking and life-changing book on management and leadership. It first of all introduced me to Marcus Buckingham, who introduced me to his ideas and the results of 25 years of research by the Gallup Organization with great managers and their organizations. This was groundbreaking! I began to understand: to make things work effectively, you can't go by the "rules" as we have been led to believe. Secondly, following the trail of Buckingham, he then led me to Now, Discover Your Strengths, then to taking the Clifton Strengthsfinder Test, a code for which came with the book, then StrengthsFinder 2.0, then finally Living Your Strengths, or the Catholic Edition Living Your Strengths: Discover Your God-given Talents And Inspire Your Community.

Life has been different. Priorities have changed. Focuses are no longer the same. Thinking has been transformed. Work habits are no longer what they were. Working with others is more important. Outcomes now are always so much better!

this could not be bad :)

Gives great insight on how good/great management is done. Raises awareness how idiosyncrasies of employees matters. As based on the analysis of 1,5 mln. of hours of interviews with 80 k managers it's hardly can be bad right? For those who cannot afford a week or so to bring the book the the knees I will list below some of the ideas I remember or had jotted down.

1. People don’t quit their companies, they quit their bosses;
2. Define the right outcomes and then let each person find his own route toward those outcomes;
3. The most efficient route that nature has found from point A to point B is rarely a straight line. It is always the path of least resistance;
4. All roles demand some accuracy & safety, standardized steps are needed (Baring Bank case);
5. Languages, symbols, conventions, scales-these are the DNA of civilization-without the ability to accept standards we could have never developed such a complex society;
6. The companies that define the new standards will gain huge advantage over latecomers;
7. Customers’ levels of expectations
a. Accuracy
b. Availability
c. Partnership;
d. Advice/educate
8. Customer is ultimate judge of value;
9. Use practical ways to see world through your customers eyes;
10. At Disney they think vibrant companies should have 5 year plans but willing to change it every year - that’s tough for the intermediaries like managers;
11. When I draw my playbook I always go from the players to the plays-head coach of Minnesota Vikings;
12. Focus on each persons strengths and manage around his weaknesses. Don’t try to fix the weaknesses… help each person to become more of who he already is;
13. One of the sings of the great manager is the ability to describe in detail the unique talent of each of his people – what drives each one, how each one thinks, how each build relationships;
14. Know the difference between the skills and knowledge and weaknesses;
15. The golden rule is broken by the great managers every day-they don’t treat people the way they would lie to be treated-people don’t breath same psychological oxygen;
16. Time you spent with your best employee (not the weakest) is your most productive time;
17. No news is never good news;
18. From the perspective of great managers averaging is irrelevant to excellence-top performers have more potential for growth;
19. Success is achieved through a never-ending pursuit of improvement-personally, professionally financially and spiritually;
20. Each of us is a couple of talent cards short of a full deck;
21. Partnerships are not archetype, each partnership in fact is anomaly;
22. If you find yourself spending most of your time managing weakness of particular employee, than know that you’ve made a casting error;
23. When employee requires growth-promotion-help each person find roles that ask him to do more and more of what he is naturally wired to do;
24. Most employees are promoted to the level of their incompetence;
25. Great managers envision company where there are multiple routes towards respect and prestige;
26. Broadbanding – for each role you define a pay in broad bands or ranges with the top end of the lower level role overlapping the bottom end of the role above-companies like Merill Lynch & Disney have well endured the practice;
27. During the Gallup’s interviews with great managers they found a consistent willingness to hire employees who the manager knew, might soon earn significantly more than they did;
28. Create heroes in every role;
29. Great managers make sure to have 4 hours a year with an employee to discuss their career path;
30. When using trial periods for employees you must be very clear about the details;
31. What level of performance is unacceptable? Any level that hovers around average with no trend upward;
32. In mind of great managers to care means to set the person up for success;
33. G.M. on “tough love”- each of best men on my two weddings was someone I fired;
34. G.M. : but I know my people some times better then they know themselves;
35. The four keys to great management are:
a. Select for talent;
b. Define the right outcomes
c. Focus on strengths;
d. Find the right fit;
36. When casting for talent ask open-ended questions;
37. Past behavior is a good predictor of future behavior. Therefore questions like “tell me about a time when you…” can serve you well;
38. Pitfall is evaluating articulation and memory of interviewed;
39. Rapid learning is an important clue to persons talent. Ask candidate what kind of roles she has been able to learn quickly. Ask her what activities come easily to her now..
40. Great managers find times for performance management routines-4 common characteristics for it:
a. Routine is simple;
b. Routine forces frequent interaction between manager and employee;
c. Routine is focused on the future
d. Makes employee to keep track of his own performance
41. In the world according to great managers the employee is the star. The manager is the agent.
42. When you enter your place of work, you never leave it at zero. You either make it a little better or a little worse.
43. Managers trump companies;
44. Human power lies in its idiosyncrasy;
45. Real profit increase drives stock increase-sustainable growth drives real profit increase-loyal customers drive customer growth-engaged employees drive customer loyalty-the right people in the right roles wit the right managers drive employee engagement;
46. Great managers are not looking for people who are easy to manage;

First, Read This Book

I read it in two sittings, and made extensive notes. My only regret is that none of my previous managers (after a 25 year career) had read it - things could have gone a lot differently for me if they had....

I've read a lot of management books, and am an Agile consultant by profession, so I was interested in this book from a perspective of how I should be advising the middle managers that I come across when training teams. This book certainly answered that question...namely that the manager's role is to reach inside each employee and release his/her unique talents into performance. To help employees earn the accolade 'talented' by fitting them in the right role. In this new information age of collaborate, self-organized teams the message in this book is more relevant than ever (despite what the authors say about self-organization (or perhaps because of it)
